I'm trying to play CD's in KDE4 but no luck.
Actually, playing CD's on Linux is only a first step (to verify it is working), my daughter wants to rip the CD using "some Itunes program into her ipod" running on Wndows XP in VirtualBox.

So, first I'm trying to make sure Linux can play the CD's but I have no luck.
Here is the hardware:
Code:
hwinfo --sound

ksdc will not play any CD nor will xine.
Dolthin file manager in KDE4 can read the CD's but will not play them.

What to try next?

Do you have cdda USE flag enabled globally (in /etc/make.conf)? If not try to add that. And also enable cddb USE flag. Then recompile using
Code:
emerge -aDN world

Once you have recompiled, dolphin should show several "folders" (these are virtual folders such as mp3, flac, ogg, etc) in your cd drive. You can simply copy and paste the songs from those folders to some actual folders in your hard drive. This will automatically rip the cd.

I just did that, it recompiled few application but makes no difference.
The CD will not play, nor there are any error messages showing; so I have not much to go by :-/

Maybe you need to reboot (or restart X server at least)? Can you also see if there are more packages needed to update, by using
Code:
emerge -auDN world

Restarting the computer or running "emerge -auDN world" makes no difference.
The strange part is that when I log-in into KDE4 on the same computer, KDE4 will not even recognize the CD, nothing pops up, nothing is mounted.
I'm in groups:
disk wheel audio cdrom video games postgres cdrw usb users vboxusers
Trying to play the cd with kscd I get segmentation fault.

When my daughter logs-in the CD is auto-mounted on KDE4 (recognized) but no sound or song list when trying to play it via kscd.

Something else is then incorrectly setup in your computer. I can't exactly figure out what. Maybe you are also missing the hal USE flag?

Maybe someone more knowledgeable here can help you better than me. But for the record, are you using the desktop/kde profile? You can see your profile by running
Code:
eselect profile list
If not, I strongly suggest you to switch to the desktop/kde profile. And then recompile your world using emerge -auDN world.

Good suggestion, but I just check my profile was already set as desktop:
default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop *
Hal is set and hald is started at boot, so this is excluded

I do agree it is something with configuration and I run out of ideas as well :-/
Thanks for all your input.

No! If you are using kde as your primary DE, you need to set it to the desktop/kde profile:
Code:
Available profile symlink targets:
  [1]   default/linux/amd64/10.0
  [2]   default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop
  [3]   default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop/gnome
  [4]   default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop/kde *
  [5]   default/linux/amd64/10.0/developer
  [6]   default/linux/amd64/10.0/no-multilib
  [7]   default/linux/amd64/10.0/server
  [8]   hardened/linux/amd64/10.0
  [9]   hardened/linux/amd64/10.0/no-multilib
  [10]  selinux/2007.0/amd64
  [11]  selinux/2007.0/amd64/hardened
  [12]  selinux/v2refpolicy/amd64
  [13]  selinux/v2refpolicy/amd64/desktop
  [14]  selinux/v2refpolicy/amd64/developer
  [15]  selinux/v2refpolicy/amd64/hardened
  [16]  selinux/v2refpolicy/amd64/server

I see, I changed the profile to kde desktop but it made no difference.
default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop/kde *
running "emerge -auDN world" there was nothing to re-compile

try adding your user to the plugdev group once

Code:
gpasswd -a YOURUSER plugdev

This must be done as root replacing "YOURUSER" with your actual username of course. Then you need to logout then log back in for the changes to take effect.

If that doesnt do the trick try commenting out the cd/dvd lines in fstab. Also if udev has been updated lately you may need to remerge hal...its unlikely that you will need to but there times when ive seen it needed to be done.

The user is already in plugdev group.
Code:
groups kathy
disk audio cdrom games postgres cdrw usb plugdev vboxusers users

Playing CD's directly.
I can rip the song from CD OK but I can not play them directly.

have any command-line audio players you can use? Only ask because I'd reckon this would generate a more useful error message.

better still, strace it. Or if trying to figure out the segfault, FEATURES="nostrip" emerge kscd, run it under gdb, backtrace, see if anything useful shows up

Consolation is, modern computer CD/DVD drives do not play audio CD's well anyway - they usually can't read at continuous slow 1x pace, so it is spinups and read-aheads. Quite noisy on all my machines, to the point that I usually pop audio CD's in my venerable 15 year old Panasonic if I want to enjoy music.
