If I were to get a new computer (which used amd instead of intel), but keep my old installation of gentoo on my hard drive, would I just have to recompile the kernel, or would I need to recompile everything, or would i have to do a whole new installation? |

Assuming your intel uses the x86 (or x86_64) architecture, all you will need is to compile support for your new chipset(s) into your kernel, mainly your SATA controller (so you can boot from your local HD). The rest can be done at a later stage. Mind that your new BIOS might order your drives on a different way (so sda might not necessarily be sda, but sdb or something else). This kind of annoyances can be sorted out forever by migrating to labels or uuids in fstab and your boot manager (if supported). But in any case this can be easily fixed for the new setup, and grub let you edit these settings interactively at boot time.
You might want to check that the new cpu supports all the extensions you've enabled in your CFLAGS. To be on the safe side you can always compile everything to a lower (more general) architecture, and then re-compile again as -march=native once the new cpu has been installed). |

I have done this in both directions at home and at work. For me I made sure I had the correct sata drivers enabled in a bootable kernel before I retired the old motherboard. Then I booted from the new system (most cases that worked) and updated the CFLAGS and did a full system rebuild. _________________ John

As long as both motherboards support AHCI (which they should if they've been made in the last few years), you won't have to worry about SATA drivers, just video, sound and chipset drivers |
