On an amd64~ system I recently emerged xorg-server-1.9.0 and xorg-drivers-1.9. That was a disaster, and after looking around a bit, I think probably due to still using hal. But I thought that backing up to x11-base/xorg-server-1.8.2 and x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.8 would solve my problems. (I have also run emerge `qlist -IC x11-drivers` after all emerges of the xorg packages.) At this point startx works, but not in a way that I would want to live with for a long time. Below is the .xsession file which may suggest something to someone more clever than I. Any help much appreciated,

My problem is solved!! I decided I needed to get xorg-server-1.9.0 working. I thought I had to use hal and went through the painful process of making up .fdi files, etc. This resulted in what seemed to have been misleading diagnostics. I then discovered what I should have found in the first place, namely useflags of -hal and udev. The changes to xorg.conf, were much, much simpler, and xorg was reasonably easy to get going.

| You may want to start a new thread. The issue that started this one has been solved. The fact that you are posting to a thread with an issue that is said to be solved may keep others from looking at your problem. As far as I can see there is no gdm-2.30. I'm running 2.20.11. and there seems to be a hard masked version 2.28.2-r1. |
