I have a windows install over vmware for the wife, I need to set my hp f4180 on it, do I need hplip for it or I can safely go an install the hp software in the windows?

I would think you should install the HP software in Windows and let the USB port emulator handle the physical connection to the printer. What you might need on the Linux host, though, is cups with the PPD file for the printer.

why would I need cups with the PPD file for the host?

Because the host is what's physically connected to the printer.

I say experiment and see what works! 8)

I don't think it is needed as the minute I've enabled the adapter, the install process identified the printer.
