Modules.conf becomes unreadable

Strange problem... my modules.conf file, seemingly randomly, becomes unreadable. Upon reboot, my modules won't load. I have since rewritten it and keep a backup for when it happens (three times already) ...but it is annoying. The only other affect I have seen besides is that ALSA mixer is muted as though I had just installed it when I restore my system. This is the latest version of gentoo as of fall 2003 and I use it mostly with fluxbox. Any idea as to why this keeps happening would be welcome...
