Matlab in my system crashes when operating on figures. In this post http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/newsreader/view_thread/158572 it is suggested to run "opengl software" in the session running matlab. However, there is no program called "opengl". The program eselect has opengl as argument, but "eselect opengl set" doesn't accept "software" as its argument. Actually there is only one available option:

Available OpenGL implementations:
  [1]   xorg-x11 *

They are talking about Suse though. What will be the equivalent setting in Gentoo?

I believe that is the equivalent setting.

Start matlab with

LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 matlab

very odd that you need to run matlab in software mode, esp since it uses ogl alot

What video-card do you use?

To install Gentoo I use sysrescuecd.Based on Gentoo,has firefox to browse Gentoo docs and mc to browse (and edit) files.
The same disk can be used for 32 and 64 bit installs.
You can follow the Handbook verbatim.
