The bug in mousepad is back that makes it freeze when you try to close it after copying text from it to somewhere else. This was a problem only when you had clipman running with xfce 4.6, but it happens all the time with xfce 4.8. Is there some in-built clipboard functionality in 4.8 that can be disabled?
4.8.0 is turning out to be a big disappointment for me |

There are in fact multiple processes of xfce4-panel running, however. I checked and the processes were not around before I launched xfce via startx (and xinitrc configured per the gentoo docs).
I've tried a bunch of things but nothing seems to be working. I wiped my .config/xfce4 folder and also tried removing and reinstalling all the xfce4 packages, wiping just about everything I could find in /etc that was xfce-related.
I did finally get the panel to actually launch by just running xfce4-panel from a terminal and creating a new configuration (that did not work before I did all the wiping). Now I can startx and the panel loads, but I still get multiple error messages as before.
This is on stable amd64. Thoughts? |
i managed to get rid of that by
1. logging out
2. deleting everything that looked like xfce from ~/.cache/session/
3. deleting everything that looked like xfce. ~/.config/autostart (no idea if this step was needed)
4. logging back into xfce _________________ If English was good enough for Jesus, then it's good enough for you! |

So far, I'm really liking Xfce 4.8. The only thing I'm missing is the weather applet. I guess they're going to add that later. |

Did the upgrade to 4.8.0 tonight. ssuominen's de-HAL-ing guide was invaluable, though it would have been nice if the ebuilds checked for the right kernel options and pulled in polkit-gnome as a dependency.
Remaining niggles, that used to work in XFCE 4.6 :
1) I am authorized to hibernate, but cannot hibernate; a snippet from "xfce4-power-manager --dump" :
Code: | Can suspend: True
Can hibernate: False
Can spin down hard disks: True
Authorized to suspend: True
Authorized to hibernate: True
Authorized to shutdown: True
Authorized to spin down hard disks: True |
Moreover, "Hibernate" does not appear as an option in the logout window.
However, "pm-hibernate" from the command line does hibernate. Something lost in the move from HAL to upower?
2) Automounting USB sticks works, but when I "eject" it claims that the eject tool is not available, and puts up a notice that data is being written to the USB stick even when there is not. After emerging the eject tool manually, "ejecting" a USB stick works as expected -- a missing dep in the thunar-volman ebuild?
3) Even though I have "Browse removable media when inserted" enabled, no Thunar window pops up when I insert a USB stick.
4) I really like the look of the Rodent icon theme, but without a replete theme like GNOME or Tango many icons are missing; unfortunately, I really dislike the look of these themes. Can anyone suggest a replete icon theme that has the feel of Rodent?
Thanks. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

This will get hibernate to appear in the logout dialog, but whether you will be able to hibernate is another problem:
Code: | xfconf-query -c xfce4-session -np '/shutdown/ShowHibernate' -t 'bool' -s 'true' |

thunderdd,
Thanks for the tip, but it doesn't work for me. The "hibernate" option on the power manager menu is grayed out as well.
Elaborating on my previous post:
* The big problem with the icons is that Thunar doesn't seem to use the folder icons that come with most themes -- it always wants to fall back to the GNOME folder icons.
* Another complaint: my home directory is now polluted with directories like "Documents" and "Pictures"; if I delete them, they come back on the next login. How do I turn off the creation of these folders?
* The "nou" theme is a decent substitute for Rodent -- same readability, a bit more style. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

Thanks, this is useful.

mmmh, strange, I deleted them once and they never came back.
My own 2cents problem is that now Thunar shows a pile of previously hidden files whose names end with a ~
I don't want to see them in Thunar or on my desktop but could not find how to disable this. Any idea?
Apart from that, I'm pretty happy with 4.8, although I didn't notice much change to be honest. And I agree with previous comments about the fact that I chose XFCE to avoid gnome, so it's rather upsetting to see all this gnome dependencies coming up... _________________ nichocouk

I can suggest only to try re-emerging consolekit, shadow, and pambase. Then restart consolekit (/etc/init.d/consolekit restart) and restart your session.
There is a good deal of information on similar problems in the early pages of this same thread. Try taking a look at pages 1-3 and see if anything jumps out at you from there.
I've also gotten some good fast help on Freenode in #xfce |

Check out xdg-user-dirs configuration, perhaps set it to "False":
Code: |
$ cat /etc/xdg/user-dirs.conf
# This controls the behaviour of xdg-user-dirs-update which is run on user login
# You can also have per-user config in ~/.config/user-dirs.conf, or specify
# the XDG_CONFIG_HOME and/or XDG_CONFIG_DIRS to override this
#
enabled=True

They do. There's kernel checks in consolekit's and udisks's ebuild. But they only tell you which one to enable, with a warning, not with an error.
udisks ebuild:
pkg_setup() {
if use amd64 || use x86; then
CONFIG_CHECK="~USB_SUSPEND ~!IDE" <- here
linux-info_pkg_setup
fi
}
consolekit ebuild:
pkg_setup() {
if use kernel_linux; then
CONFIG_CHECK="~AUDITSYSCALL" <- here
linux-info_pkg_setup
fi
}
And there's polkit-gnome or lxpolkit depend with USE=gtk in sys-auth/polkit's ebuild now:
gtk? ( || ( >=gnome-extra/polkit-gnome-0.96-r1 >=lxde-base/lxpolkit-0_p20101225 ) )

Why must gnome or any other polkit agent be pulled in?
I could see there being a warning that if an agent is not used that they will have to edit Local Authority files. _________________ PRIME x570-pro, 3700x, 6.1 zen kernel

The deletions do seem to persist now, after fixing the consolekit/policykit issues per ssuominen's guide.

thunderdd:
What's odd is that the suspend option appears and works fine in both the logout dialog and the power manager menu, while hibernate is disabled in both. Comparing with the power manager dump, it seems that some piece of code thinks that I am authorized to hibernate, but the computer is unable to do so.

Thanks for the corrections, and the tip about the XDG dirs -- if the problem comes back I can try that. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

Hi everyone,
I am currently struggling with the upgrade. It is blocked on both xfwm4 as well as xfce4-settings, with errors like these:
Code: | # xfwm4
xfwm4-settings.c: In function ‘xfwm_settings_shortcut_row_activated’:
xfwm4-settings.c:2014: erreur: too many arguments to function ‘xfce_shortcuts_provider_set_shortcut’
# xfce4-settings
xfce-keyboard-settings.c: In function ‘_xfce_keyboard_settings_load_shortcut’:
xfce-keyboard-settings.c:502: erreur: ‘XfceShortcut’ has no member named ‘snotify’
xfce-keyboard-settings.c: In function ‘xfce_keyboard_settings_edit_shortcut’:
xfce-keyboard-settings.c:572: erreur: too many arguments to function ‘xfce_shortcuts_provider_set_shortcut’
xfce-keyboard-settings.c: In function ‘xfce_keyboard_settings_edit_command’:
xfce-keyboard-settings.c:634: erreur: too many arguments to function ‘xfce_shortcuts_provider_set_shortcut’
xfce-keyboard-settings.c: In function ‘xfce_keyboard_settings_shortcut_added’:
xfce-keyboard-settings.c:775: erreur: ‘XfceShortcut’ has no member named ‘snotify’
xfce-keyboard-settings.c: In function ‘xfce_keyboard_settings_add_button_clicked’:
xfce-keyboard-settings.c:883: erreur: too many arguments to function ‘xfce_shortcuts_provider_set_shortcut’
|
So I have searched the forums and around the net, and from what I could gather it all comes down to rebuilding either libfxce4ui or libxfcegui4 (this thread even mentions this, right here), but this has absolutely no effect on my system. Even after rebuilding one or the other, or both, emerging these last two components still breaks. As some errors seem keyboard related, I have also tried rebuilding xfce4-settings without that USE flag, but no dice.
The info overload follows:
Code: | $ emerge -pqv =xfce-base/xfwm4-4.8.0
[ebuild U ] xfce-base/xfwm4-4.8.0 [4.6.2] USE="startup-notification xcomposite -debug"
$ emerge -pqv =xfce-base/xfce4-settings-4.8.0
[ebuild U ] xfce-base/xfce4-settings-4.8.0 [4.6.5] USE="keyboard libnotify -debug -sound"
|
Info and build log for xfwm4 here, and here for xfce4-settings. If you need more, please say so.
Thanks in advance for any help. |

ssuominen,
Looks like udisks-1.0.2 will pull in eject, and I'll also try >upower-0.9.5 for my hibernation niggle when they go stable.
But, shouldn't udisks-1.0.1 also depend on eject? _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

FWIW, here's my upgrade build order (in a different distro):
libxfce4util 4.8.1
xfconf 4.8.0
gtk-xfce-engine 2.8.0
exo 0.6.0
libxfce4ui 4.8.0
libxfcegui4 4.8.0
xfwm4 4.8.0
garcon 0.1.5
xfce4-panel 4.8.0
xfce4-dev-tools 4.8.0
Thunar 1.2.0
xfce-utils 4.8.0
xfce4-settings 4.8.0
xfdesktop 4.8.0
xfce4-session 4.8.0
xfce4-battery-plugin 1.0.0
xfce4-weather-plugin 0.7.3
Terminal 0.4.5
xfce4-xkb-plugin 0.5.3.3
I found that xfwm4 needs libxfcegui4 to be upgraded first. |

That has been done when I updated my system. Even when I unmerge it and try to emerge xfwm4, portage correctly adds it beforehand, but it still doesn't allow xfwm4 of xfce4-settings to properbly build.
I will try your build order though, see if it improves anything. Thanks. |

Wonderful theme -- complete, and in the spirit of Rodent. Also replaces the stock power-manager icons with something interesting.

Leadpad appears to have the exact same copy/paste bug that mousepad suffers from:
1)type some text in leafpad
2)copy it
3)paste somewhere else
4)try to quit leafpad...it hangs for a bit before exiting. |

Yes, same problem here. I also found this http://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=5659 and I tried to update the MIME-Info database cache. But no luck. If I check the ~/Desktop directory with thunar, the .desktop extension is not shown. So it's probably a xfdesktop issue?
Any help appreciated.
