FC-AL disks, how fast are they? I'm asking because I've been offered the chance of a Sun Blade 2000 with a pair of FC-AL disks.

Many thanks!

2x73GB Fibre-Channel @10 000 RPM.
http://www.sun.com/desktop/workstation/sunblade2000/
Probably decent for a server. :-)

Maybe high on power usage.

I was more interested in potential throughput i.e. how many megabytes / second. Can anyone answer that?

Many thanks!

I can guess. :-)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibre_Channel

The Sun Blade 1000 was replaced in 2002 with the Sun Blade 2000.

Unless the hardware was changed after it was first introduced, it is 200 MBps.

It's more likely to be about 100 MBps but that's still faster than most disks today!

What is the throughput on current 7200 RPM SATA disks?

Well, my P4 laptop reports 45 Mb/s (not Mbps) on its ATA disk, so I'll bet SATA disks are a bit better!

Hi,

I think the problem with the old FC disks is that those are "end of life" at propably all the manufactureres like Seagate and you will have problems to find a spare disk if one fails...
The throughput should be about the same as an old SCSI disk, as normally the disk technique is the same with the SCSI and FC disks. Only the interface to the host bus was different: SCSI or FC. SCSI has some limitations like maximum of 15 connectable drives per bus where FC allows up to 127 drives...
I think modern SAS or even SATA drives have the same throughput ( MB/s ). A normal SATA drive should have about 100 MB/s write with a sequential test like dd.

I just measured the speed on my Ultra-2 disks today using Gnome-Disk-Utility 2.30.2.

18.2GB SCSI-3 80pin SCA - 19MB/s
73GB SCSI-3 80pin SCA - 19MB/s

Quite respectable for a machine built in 1997. Shame the dual 300MHz blackbirds are the main bottleneck nowadays.

My PATA disk in my P4 laptop does 45MB/s

Can't wait to see just how fast those FC-AL disks are! :)

The Ultra 2 has a Fast Wide SCSI-2 interface and is therefore always limited to 20MB/s on the internal interface -- even with fairly fast disks. Your disks could probably go faster on a different controller.

I've got a couple of SunFire 280Rs with FC-AL disks

hdparm gives me 58MB/s

Nice

I've just tested my 'Blade 2000 for its hard disk throughput. With hdparm -tT on each of the FC-AL disks, I get a respectable 65MB/s. When both disk are put together as a RAID10 with layout = f2, I get 91MB/s, that's well close to the theoretical limit of 100MB/s.
