Howdy -- I've searched the message boards, but can't seem to find an answer. I keep getting this error message when performing a stage 1 install of Gentoo... just after typing (to update my Portage):

shell> emerge -u portage

I get the following error:

configure: error C++ preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check

!!! ERROR: sys-libs/ncurses-5.3-r1 failed.
!!! Function econf, Line 320, Exitcode 1
!!! econf failed

Can anyone help put a n00b desperately trying to learn this in the right direction?

TIA,

SPAHZ

Did you try 'emerge system' first before updating portage? . I think that the 'emerge portage' command only works if you have done 'emerge system first'. Even if the computer tells you that you should update portage first. If all goes correctly, emerging system will also emerge the latest version of portage.

That seems to cause a "chicken before the egg" problem because "EMERGE SYNC" isn't supposed to be done until Stage 2 (after the bootstrap process).

Is it okay to run EMERGE SYNC before I've run the bootstrap process?

TIA

Actually, i have no idea if you could do that, i'v just started using gentoo myself and i only replied because i had the same problem, the one difference being that i started from a stage-2 install and that you'v started from a stage 1 install. So, i'm sorry, but you'll have to ask someone who did a stage 1 install from scratch

Okay, well thanks for trying -- I certainly appreciate the effort. Anyone else?

You are not supposed to update portage until you have your system up and running. The problem here is that portage doesn't (and cannot?) know that you haven't even bootstrapped yet.

As far as I remember, the first thing you do after chrooting is emerge sync'ing.
