That is normal. The system is now ready for you to install, by following the handbook.

Please RTFM.
This is normal behaviour.
You could also try the 2008 live DVD which has an installer if you are not comfortable with cli.

Rita G.

On gentoo, you are the installer. The Handbook gives step by step instructions.

Do not use the 2008.0 DVD installer. It does a binary install from a February 2008 portage snapshot. Thats almost three years old and very difficult to update to todays Gentoo. Current advice for even a one year old install is to reinstall.

Rita G.,
these are the step you should follow:
1. from the Handbook page, select the version that match your arch (usually "x86" for a plain 32bit installation or "amd64" for 64 bit)
2. read carefully the manual of your choice: it describe all the action you need to take in order to install a basic Gentoo system;
3. consider to use the gentoo-based SystemRescueCD in place of the "minimal install CD", since it can support recent hardware and has many handy features that may help you in your task;
4. once you boot the installation CD (be it the "minimal install CD" or "SystemRescueCD") your next step is "Configuring your Network" (Chapter 3): from this point on, follow the guide...

You have not described any situation which any of us consider to be a problem. Your first post indicated that the system has booted normally and is ready for you to follow the instructions in the handbook, starting from the beginning. If you are not comfortable with the handbook, please cite the section of it which is troubling you and explain the problem so that we can try to clarify.

Rita G.

You need to follow all of the handbook.

You don't have a problem yet. What you describe is correct behaviour for a gentoo minimal disk being booted.
Read the handbook from end to end. Then follow it to install your Gentoo base system.

If you would prefer a Graphical User Interface (not installer), instead of a root shell prompt, use SystemRescueCD as you bootable CD. The install process remains unchanged.

Maybe someone should tell Rita that this CD is just called "Install CD". It actually doesn't install anything at all. It's just an OS you can boot into to install something, in this case gentoo linux if you would follow the instructions in the gentoo handbook.

What you see there is a prompt. Some funny oldschool command line. You can do some freaky magic with it by talking to your PC with specified commands (yes.. you can actually type something at this prompt).
If you have a look into the handbook you'll see some commands you have to perform to install gentoo.
But well.. I'm not sure if gentoo is the right OS for you if you don't know what a command line is.

Anyway good luck ^^

Inability to use sound in the minimal CD is not surprising, nor should it be considered an issue. You will only be on the install CD until you have a working environment, at which point you can install a kernel that is more precisely tuned to your hardware.

Inability to use the network is a problem. If you post an actual error message, we might be able to help you.

Following the Handbook step by step should get you pretty far.
The "books" are listed at:

www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook

as previously linked.

Make sure you are viewing the right one for your Processor, for example 32-bit system you'd use the x86 one.
For 64-bit, you'd use the amd64 (for Intel as well).

As you are having problems with the Networking, which is pretty much a MUST for following the Handbook (if you can't download the items needed from another installation for example), check the part 3, Configuring your Network.
If it just wont work by following that part, post your results here, and also use the command:

Code:

lspci

or even
Code:

lspci -k

for more info.
Look for Ethernet or Networking or something like that, and post the info you get here, perhaps you need to manually install a module for it or something like that.

I'm just a noob myself, but here are some thoughts that I hope can be of some help. :]
I know it can be very complicated at first but thou should not give up yet, though taking a break can help a lot at times!

thank you all for replies. my problem right now is time; i just don't have the time to learn a whole lot of new stuff during the warmer months due to work, and i'll have to install a distro that's a little more user-friendly for now. this winter i'll have more time time to learn gentoo as i am really anxious to try it.

Gentoo is user-friendly as well, but yes there is a lot to learn even when just installing it, but it's a BIG part of Gentoo itself.
Installing Gentoo gives a picture of what it is to maintain as well.
You keep learning after installing too, but it's not really that hard to maintain or so, but especially for the initial install, it does indeed take some time, mostly because of getting used to it. :]

I personally tried only Ubuntu before Gentoo, and that one is really easy to go with it, but I would not go for it after Gentoo. ^^

Anyways, good luck!
And see you again in the future, purrhaps~

Packages (applications) in Gentoo you compile from source yourself... this takes time.

Gentoo I would class as Linux for intermediate/expert users. Not saying someone new to Linux can't use it, but it will require a fairly steep learning curve and is not something you can do over a cup of coffee and a biscuit.
