Production System on Dell's server line?

First of all I'm sorry for posting this here, but I couldn't think of a more suitable category.

I'm about to build my very first Gentoo Server for work and I'm wondering if anyone has any feedback regarding Dell's server line (specifically PowerEdge T310).

Especially the PERC Raid controllers tend to confuse me and since this system won't run any critical tasks I'm wondering if I'm better off with a SDD for the OS and software RAID for anything else.

Dell isn't my favorite company, but since I order quite much from them it would be rather convenient to stick with them...

Speaking from experience... forget about the PERC controllers, mdadm software RAID is better behaved, faster and more flexible.

Thanks, that is quite reassuring (I'm using mdadm at home since a couple of years without running into any problems).

I wouldn't even mind if it wasn't the first Linux system I have ever deployed at a larger company.
