Hi dear all,

I have X11 working fine with ati-driver or xfree-radeon separately.
but when they are both installed and I select xfree with eselect opengl command along with switching to the matching xorg.conf I only get a dark screen.
And the constrain to hard reset too :( .

Any advice to get a smoother behaviour?

Thks for your attention.

Did you change the driver from 'fglrx' to 'radeon' in your xorg.conf?

Actually the two xorg.conf have been generated separately. None inheritates from the other. The one for xfree driver as follows:
Code:

I have to emerge -C ati-drivers to have the xfree driver working. The ati-driver doesn't care whether xfree is installed or not.

EDIT:by the way, ati is compiled in kernel as module, maybe the issue has something to do with that?

Thks for your attention, interest and support.[/quote]

Investigating a little futher, it seems a reboot between the opengl and xorg.conf switches fixes the issue. Very unpleasant still ... Any ideas?

You need to unload radeon or fglrx kernel modules when switching.

Note that this does not work with KMS (you can still unload the radeon module with some tricks, but fglrx won't work until reboot then).
