hey guys!
I just installed gentoo and I love it! But there's a problem with cups. I did all the tings from the HowTohttp://www.gentoo.org/doc/de/printing-howto.xml#doc_chap5 on the official gentoo web-page. At the point where I should go to http://localhost:631. my problem starts. When I should specify the device there's no usb-option as told in the HowTo. So first I tried to install drivers for my printer. I downloaded a .ppd file for my brother HL-2030 from http://www.openprinting.org/printers and moved it to /usr/share/cups/model/ and of course I restarted cups. But it doesn't work for me! I see neither the option USB-connection on http://localhost:631 nor detect cups my printer by itself as it should corresponding to the help/documentation flag on http://localhost:631. I'm very thankful for help!
cheers

The printer "driver" (assuming you are using cups-1.3) is the usblp driver in your kernel. You printer should be shown as USB printer in the add printer dialog if your kernel is configured correctly. Verify that you have the following kernel option enabled: Code: | CONFIG_USB_PRINTER=y |
The PPD and rasterizer are then used to convert PostScript to something which the printer understands. You can use either the brother proprietary driver or a PCL filter from the generic filter collections (gutenprint, hpijs, etc.). The PPD is useful on its own only for PostScript printers. |
