QCad is nice but where will it go in the future?
Newer versions (2.1.0.0) are not free anymore, and the GPL community version (2.0.5.0) will lack some important functions such as poly lines and scripting.
Latest free version in portage currently is 2.0.4.0-r4.
- Will there be a new ebuild for the 2.0.5.* Community version?
- Is there going to be a group maintaining a separate branch of the free version?
Using QCad for professional use I would even buy the license. But that would mean getting used to an application that will always be closed/licensed, so I could just switch to AutoCAD etc. anyway.
And finally a starting list of wishes:- Using 2 screens I'm running 2 instances of QCad but copy between should be possible. Currently it's only possible to copy inside the application.

It's always a good idea to lookup Bugzilla. Doesn't look like there's a lot of interest on dev side...

Best you can do is contacting sci@gentoo.org and the users subscribed to the relevant bug reports.

Well, your choice. There might be that there's a chance some dev is interested in the professional version too. It wouldn't harm, if the manufacturer would provide a version for packaging purposes for free, in this case. Looking at the last changelog entries it doesn't look like it, though.

Probably something you should ask the developers of the application about. _________________ Please make sure that you have searched for an answer to a question after reading all the relevant docs. |

Actually I'm interested in the official license of the current version. It's not cheap compared to AutoCAD, but I like the software and would like to support it.
While sci-misc/qcad-2.0.4.0-r4 works fine, the current demo version qcad-2.1.0.0-1-demo.linux.x86.tar.gz runs very slow, screen refresh for zoom is just too slow to work. I'm not sure to pay for the official version, that would be the same problem. I could imagine it comes as static linked binary package.
The system is x86, P4 2.8GHz, 2G RAM, Radeon 9550 using kernel module, dualscreen, no direct rendering available. _________________ HP ZBook Power 15.6" G8 i7-11800H|HP EliteDesk 800G1 i7-4790|HP Compaq Pro 6300 i7-3770 |

It's an old thread, but I don't see it before.
You can be interested by the gEDA that is 100% gpl. _________________ "Confirm You are a robot." - the singularity |

qCAD is a mechanical CAD package, gEDA is an electronics CAD package, I fail to see how the recommendation of one to replace another is valid when both apps do completely different thing targeted at completly different people _________________ #define HelloWorld int

Dominique did not mention as replacement. Nice hint, I didn't hear about Geda before and yes, it's already in portage: sci-electronics/geda
You can do electronic CAD with qCad too, there are templates for electronic purpose in the library. And from what I can see from their project site Geda also is just a CAD tool without simulation abilities. But actually yes, this thread was meant for mechanical engineering purpose.
Anyway good tribute to the science/engineering division on Gentoo. _________________ HP ZBook Power 15.6" G8 i7-11800H|HP EliteDesk 800G1 i7-4790|HP Compaq Pro 6300 i7-3770 |

It can, interfacing either with spice or Ngspice, which is the official SPICE simulator of the gEDA suite
I am gonna give it a try.... _________________ Ok boomer

I am sorry for the mistake. I was tired and stressed when I read this thread.
Edit: gEDA have 2 simulators: ngspice and gnucap. Gnucap is definitely worth trying if you are using a lot of subcircuits as components because it have a model compiler. It is a new generation simulator, not one more spice flavor and its design is very efficient. _________________ "Confirm You are a robot." - the singularity |

Very interesting. There have already been some trials to install it: [1] [2] _________________ HP ZBook Power 15.6" G8 i7-11800H|HP EliteDesk 800G1 i7-4790|HP Compaq Pro 6300 i7-3770 |

Thanks for a very helpful HOWTO. It seems a pity this is no longer in portage.
At present, I can't get the manual because the ribbonsoft FTP site appears to be empty. The rest of the HOWTO works well, except that the icon, which would have been part of the download for the manual, is not available. |

Unfortunately, the HOWTO for qcad 2.0.5.0 no longer works.
Is it possible to build qcad using qt4 with qt3-support? |

qcad is now into the kde-sunset overlay. Work fine here on ~amd64.
The qcad-parts file have moved. You can download it from http://www.ribbonsoft.com/qcad_downloads.html before to digest the ebuild. _________________ "Confirm You are a robot." - the singularity |

Thanks Dominique_71, I'll give it a try.
I have absolutely no interest in KDE at all. After running KDE for many years, I found I could not stomach the KDE4 emphasis on eye-candy at the expense of performance, nor all the KDE4 bugs, so I moved to Gnome. This was a good move, Gnome is stable, fast, and lean.
On the other hand, I really do need qcad for work purposes. I'll certainly install kde-sunset for now, but I'd be keen to find a way to run qcad without the KDE baggage. Is KDE really needed for qcad, or is it only a matter of QT3 being required? |

kde-sunset is for kde3. I don't know how long it will work, but I need it for kaffeine, because phonon under fvwm with JACK as sound server, is impossible to get it to work, So, no sound at all with the last kaffeine here. But that's another issue for another thread.
If you are using other kde programs, "emerge program" will install the last kde4 version, when "emerge =program-version" will install the version "version" of the program. They will be slotted in the case you install both the kde 3 and 4 versions. _________________ "Confirm You are a robot." - the singularity |
