I'm having real problems with KDE and invisible menus. When I select the kickoff button I just get a section of screen blurred where the menu should be. I have to re-select it once or twice to get the actual contents to appear. This happens with most of the pull down menus and has happened over the past week due to an upgrade but I'm not sure which one.
I'm running kde-4.5.3, xorg-server-1.8.2 and xf86-video-intel-2.13.0 on ~x86_64
I can't upgrade to xorg-1.9 due to mesa being broken on Intel chipsets

I've also got a similar problem with konqueror on another machine with an Nvidia GPU which gives a black block on pull down menus on web pages until I re-select it a couple of times. Does anyone else get similar isssues?

Same issue here with same xorg-server, kde, and video-intel versions. Also same inability to use xorg-1.9. My nVidia using machine isn't having this issue.

Basically, the intel drivers are crappy and they tell KWin that they can do stuff that they actually can't:

suspending desktop effect "resolve" the problem

Happens to me with various version configurations. Currently running kde-4.5.3, xorg-server-1.9.2.901, libdrm-9999, xf86-video-intel-9999 and mesa-9999 on ~x86_64 and the problem still exists.

I tried switching to xrender as someone suggested. Invisible menus are gone, but desktop effects are horribly slow (like 3 seconds to bring up auto-hidden taskbar). But the Desktop Effects section of System Settings insists that they are not available, so I can't turn them off. I also can't put it back to OpenGL now even with Disable Functionality Checks marked. So just a warning to anyone thinking of trying that.
