I'm installing X for the first time on a brand new Gentoo box (nvidia GeForce3 card w/ nforce2 chipset). I followed the desktop guide by doing an emerge sync, emerge xfree, and then doing an xf86config, etc. but when I get to the startx point I get this error:

Quote:

Using authority file /root/.Xauthority
Writing authority file /root/.Xauthority
Using authority file /root/.Xauthrority
Writing authority file /root/.Xauthority

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

I'm in the midst of emerging openoffice so I didn't want to remove that file. Still I'm a bit concerned as to how this would happen on the first shot. I've tried redoing xf86config to choose different settings (e.g. different syncs, different graphic cards, etc) but to no avail.

Anyone have an idea on this?

Your free to remove the lock file. It wont hurt anything else.

If your unsure about your configuration check out this. Start with a minimal configuration to make sure the basic settings are correct before fudging around too much.

Edit: You did emerge and configure a window manager as well, right?
