I jsut cant get the Gentoo thing!

Ok, look i have been tryin to instll gentoo for the past month or so and i had it once about 1 1/2 weeks ago and i had forgotten to include RTC and VFAT support in the kernel so i went back and recomipled it and issued a mv command like a guy told me todo and it screwed up my system completely. I have now gotten back to the point where i can emerge the kernel sources(emerge -k sys-kernel/gentoo-sources) but when i compile it gives me either a kernel panic or a weird segmentation violation. i have ran the memtest adn all the diagnostics on my HD and they are all good an no errors in the memory. Its a segate HD. i hope that someone can help me because i want gentoo up and running. i dont plan on giving up on it. Sometimes emerge sync doesnt work either...this is my 30th attempt after the sucessful compile and probably close to 50th time all together. I would appreciate any help i can get. thanks in advance
