I am trying to get my laptop to stay on when I close the lid as long as it is on AC power. This does not appear to be an option in Power Management. When on plugged in I can black screen, suspend, hibernate, or shutdown...but there is no option to leave on. I use my laptop with an external monitor and when plugged in, I want to be able to shut it but still use it. Any tips?

Are you using some too clever program like hal or power management acpi tools?
Try to manually enable monitor using xrandr and/or xset via e.g. ssh.

I think you can configure this by editing

/etc/acpi/default.sh
