Hi there,

I'm discovering Gentoo, and I've got a emerge-related question:
If I want to, say, install mplayer from the CVS version, as I'm used to do it with my slackware, what do I have to do in order to:
1) have the ability to configure it by myself (I want to include lirc support, tv support and such things)
2) have the possibility of removing it in a clean way
3) be able to export an ebuild package (if possible)

A second question for the same price, in the same category:
If I want to install a program that HAS an ebuild package, how do I get the possibility of adding personalized configure settings?

I hope it's clear enough :-)
Pierric.

Well in Gentoo there is nothing to stop you from getting source code on your own (from tarball, CVS, or any other means) and compiling it. Cleaning something you have installed from the sources is the same as it is on any other system like Slack, you are responsible for what went where and why (so you clean it up.) If you want to make your own ebuild you most certainly can, I never have personally so I can't give you much information in that direction though. If you are compiling something from an ebuild you can pass arguments, it uses the "USE" settings by default but those can be over-ridden on a case by case basis as well (or you can permanently modify your USE settings if you wish, of course.)
