|
|
I recently just built (aka <1 week ago) a new Sandy Bridge based computer and am having a rough time trying to get Mozilla applications to start. Firefox currently does not even start 95% of the time, I just run it from a terminal and literally nothing happens. The same exact thing happens for Thunderbird.
At some point in time I got Firefox to start a few times and it almost immediately crashed with a segfault. I ended up emerging Chromium so I at least am able to have a browser.
I really have no clue why this is happening, the stuff emerged fine, there's nothing to depclean, revdep-rebuild comes back empty, and emerge -uND world doesn't yield anything. Anyone have any ideas?
Here's my emerge --info

hmmm. what is your:
#lspci
and your
#uname -a
try from tty. my epiphany is crashing and here is the problem. i'll need to unemerge and emerge epiphany
wc@azzerare ~ $ epiphany
epiphany: error while loading shared libraries: libicui18n.so.44: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Did you un-emerge first?
I had same problem when I first installed.

What happens if you rename your ~/.mozilla folder or, alternately, create and login as a new user and then try firefox?
This should isolate any corrupted plugins or configuration files. YMMV _________________ Nothing is too wonderful to be true, if it be consistent with the laws of nature -- Michael Faraday |

I have been trying to run firefox/thunderbird from tty in hopes of catching an error but literally *nothing* shows up. I've also completely removed .mozilla and .thunderbird multiple times and it has no effect. |

Both Firefox and TB are depedant on XULRunner so that got pulled in automatically. As noted above, I also had recompiled it with -custom-optimizations. |

Have you tried with root and a different user?

I don't know if this will help.
You could try:

Have you deleted your config files?
cd /home/you/

Literally *nothing* happens. The command just returns immediately and there are no messages printed. The exact same happens for Thunderbird. |

Any update or bug filed on this issue? I got hit with this
when I rebuilt xulrunner and firefox this week.
Luckily firefox-bin works for me, but I'd still rather build it.
Thanks |

Makes me feel slightly better I'm not the only one having issues. |

I seem to have "fixed" (or at least worked around) this problem. I had the same initial symptom: New Sandy Bridge-based system, Thunderbird just does nothing when invoked. Later, I managed to get it to admit to erroring out with segv. I suspected some incompatibility with the Sandy Bridge, so I removed the CFLAGS from my /etc/make.conf (it had included march=native) and then used a big hammer: Code: | emerge -av --emptytree thunderbird | I can now launch Thunderbird.

I think you found the issue, at least for me. New Sandy Bridge system, I just moved my old install over from an Athlon64.
I rebuilt firefox and xulrunner without -march=native and now it launches fine. |

Yep, this fix worked for me. Just added a /etc/portage/env/mail-client/thunderbird, /etc/portage/env/www-client/firefox, and /etc/portage/env/net-libs/xulrunner containing:
Code: |
CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
|
and re-emerged xulrunner, firefox, and thunderbird.
I can't believe I didn't think about trying this, good catch. |

I'm running GCC-4.5.2 and I described my problem in the GCC-4.5-testing thread: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-806781-start-350.html .
As I already mentioned there I tried to compile xulrunner, firefox and thunderbird without the graphite stuff in the cflags and without -march=native. And I don't have a Sandy Bridge system. |

I didn't go one by one on the cflags, but -mavx does seem to be the problem as the following works fine.
CFLAGS="-O2 -mcx16 -msahf -maes -mpopcnt -mpclmul -msse -msse2 -mssse3 -msse4.1 -msse4.2 -pipe" |

I've once had the same problem with firefox. I could solve it with deleting the compatibility.ini in the according profile folder, that would make firefox start again. I've had to do this every time before I start firefox, however, one day came an update that solved this issue for me. Also am using gcc 4.5.2 |

I had this exact problem, with a fresh install on the same Sandy Bridge architecture. In addition to firefox and thunderbird failing, I was also having trouble getting gcc 4.4.5 to recompile.after a change of use flags. Changing my CFLAGS to "march=native -mno-avx -O2 pipe" fixed all these problems at the same time. |
