Im currently using pulseaudio with alsa (alsa apps are mapped to pulseaudio, while pulseaudio outputs to alsa)
I want to output to jack by default instead of outputting to alsa, because I have a few apps that I want to use Jack for, so I might as well just use it for default.

Jack will be started at startup with realtime piority, along with pulseaudio, which ive already set realtime.

How can I accomplish this?
Current PAM limits
Code:

*       hard    rtprio  0
*       soft    rtprio  0
@audio  hard    rtprio  20
@audio  soft    rtprio  10

Uhm.. I am not sure if you really want to do that.
The problem with systemwide realtime audio is that it's pretty crackly as soon as you have high CPU load.
It doesn't make sense to use it for a normal multimedia desktop.

There's another problem.. Jack and Pulse are talking with each other over dbus.
Jack is asking Pulse for taking over the device as soon as you start it and gives it back to Pulse when you stop Jack again.

I'm using Jack and Pulse here too. Jack only for realtime audio and music composition and Pulse for everything else.
It's working quite well but I also have to soundcards here.

I've blogged my settings in my blog: http://gentoomemories.blogspot.com/

actually, I finally decided on pulling pulseaudio. Pulseaudio has been giving me a lot of random audio disconnections, crackling and whatnot, so I decided to use jack realtime instead.
I now mapped all alsa stuff to jack. Since I have a Core-i7 in my laptop, I actually have very low cpu usage with jack. No problems.

Hmm.. the crackling got a lot better in the new pulse version and I got rid of it by using my second soundcard for the systemsounds.
But well.. I have the problem that jack isn't able to use two soundcards at the same time without annoying workarounds.

How are your experiences with realtime jack when you use several audiostream in a desktop enviroment and the cpu is under full load, for example while emerging something? I have only an Athlon XP 3800 here and it was impossible to listen to music under high cpu usage.

It works well still, however im not sure if its supposed to work by default, or because im using BFS.
The only thing I havent been able to get working is Quake Live and Virtualbox.
