Need to remake older kernel

I need to remake an older kernel (linux-2.6.35-gentoo-r12). I have a 3rd party CAN driver that is only compatible with that kernel. The problem is that recent X broke the nvidia drivers I use with that kernel. I'd like to remake the old kernel to use the Nouveau driver to get X back. It looks like when a new kernel source tree is emerged (linux-2.6.36-gentoo-r5) the Makefiles in the old sources no longer exist! What the heck is going on?
