Doesn't work here, in X (nor otherwise, but couldn't care less about that). Anyone else?
Running HP Xe4500 with Mobility M6, XF 4.3.0 and DRI drivers.
EDIT: PROBLEM SOLVED (2003-09-21)
Adding
Option "DPMS" "True"
to display card device section fixed it. No scripts or hacks required :)

Did you explicitly enable DPMS in your XF86Config file? |

Yes.
xset dpms force off makes the screen black, but doesn't turn off the backlight. |

Oh, actually it is in X - had to add Option "DPMS" "True" (or something like that) to the display section, works now. No need to use that hack anymore. |
