|
|
Hello, everybody,
I followed the Gentoo Printing guide to configure my printing and have problems. Here's the situation:
The "Hewlett Packard DeskJet 710C" printer is connected to my desktop PC with Windows XP installed and I want to access it from my notebook with Gentoo as it hasn't got any jacks to connect it.
So I installed Samba with "readline cups pam ldap python winbind" flags and Cups with "dbus jpeg php png samba X ppds" flags. Edited some of the Samba and Cups configuration files following the guide.
On Windows XP I shared the printer with the name "hpdjet710c". The firewall is off...
On Gentoo I entered http://localhost:631/ and added a printer to cups. As a printer name I used the above "hpdjet710c", other PC's hostname and so on. As a connection type I used every of them. But I heard IPP is the best.
Some info from cups:
Printer Driver: HP DeskJet 710C Foomatic/pnm2ppa (recommended)
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: ipp://192.168.1.3/ipp/
AND...
When I hit http://localhost:631/ in my Gentoo browser and have a look at "Manage Printers" page, it writes:
"Unable to connect to CIFS host after (tried 3 times)". OR "/usr/libexec/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed".
#> lpstat -a Displays the following:
lpstat:
Also somewhere I've seen a message that cups could not connect to windows machine as it is busy...
Maybe the IPP drivers or smth on Windows XP needs to be installed?
I would appreciate any help and thanks in advance for your time. |

Stupid question, but did you enable "file and printer sharing" on the windows XP machine? even if you have the firewall off, if that setting is not enabled, you will not share the printer.
Also, are both computers (XP and Gentoo) on the same workgroup/domain? Can you access any shared folders from the XP machine on your notebook? if not, I would start there and configure Samba first, to ensure that both computers can see each other and share files. Once that works, thenyou can tackle the printer.
Also, IPP stands for Internet Printing Protocol. If the printer is network capable (or you are using a print server), IPP can work over the internet/local network. Since you are sharing a non-network printer from XP (which does not enable IPP by default), you need to use SMB:// protocol (Hence the above point to make sure samba is working and you can see the XP computer from the Gentoo computer).
Hope this helps. |
