Hello all,
I've been trying to switch to Linux for some time now but i keep running into all sorts of problems.

The most insignificant ones are related to xfce4. When i startx (exec ck-launch-session startxfce4 in .xinirtc) for the first time
1- running Thunar for the first time takes 25 seconds to load. .. yeah i know :) - this happends only after a reboot, if i log out and log back in - it loads normally.
2- the Windows Button filter for "Show windows from all monitors" does not work. Its unchecked but i still get windows from all monitors on my panel. I have to either manually check and uncheck the filter to behave properly OR to log out and log back in
3- i cant restart or shut down as user, i can only log out, even though i've tried all the suggestions i could find on google and in the xfce4 faq

I've gotten used to these but there are other things that bother me

4- i was using imgburn in windowze to burn some xbox360 backups and couldnt get imgburn to work in wine, it wont start at all due to some error; however thats fine as long as i have an alternative. but i dont! have an alternative.
i run growisofs -use-the-force-luke=dao -use-the-force-luke=break:1913760 -dvd-compat -speed=4 -Z /dev/dvd=/path/to/blabla.iso ; growisofs ignores my -speed=4 and burns it with 8 ; i'm not sure if the burning speed is the problem but my xbox wont run backups written by growisofs. It just hangs while trying to read the dvds. well "my xbox" is the main reason i'm hatting on microsoft and dont want to use any of their products anymore but thats not the point.

5- maya 2011 crashes with signal 11. Taken from random wiki
Code:
If maya crashes with a message like this:
 maya encountered a fatal error
  Signal: 11 (Unknown Signal)
try to enable Xinerama in your xorg.conf file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) by installing the appropriate packages and adding the line
 Option "Xinerama" "true"
within the Section "ServerLayout".

However nvidia double buffer wont work with xinerama enabled; thus apps like conky wont work properly anymore, so what do i do? save my progress more often i guess..

6- i've figured last night that, in order to stop games spanning on both of my monitors i have to add a metamode! in xorg.conf. Atm its
Code:
Option         "metamodes" "CRT: 1280x1024_75 +1920+0, DFP: 1920x1080_60 +0+0; DFP: 1920x1080_60 +0+0, CRT: NULL"

This is fine for native linux games but wine has problems with this.
When i run a game in wine that's setup for fullscreen and 1920x1080 resolution, it switches like it should to the second metamode (DFP: 1920x1080_60 +0+0, CRT: NULL). But when i exit wine, it doesnt switches back to the first metamode so CRT remains ...NULL.
When i run wine on a virtual desktop 1920x1080, it doesnt switches to the second metamode anymore. Thats fine BUT "Allow DirectX apps to stop the mouse leaving their window" doesnt work.
So basically i can either play games properly - with my second monitor remaining NULL even after i quit playing
or
Play games on the virtual desktop with my mouse leaving that virtual desktop.

If anyone can help me with ANY of these little buggers i'd greatly appreciate it :)

Edit: i figured i should post xfce problems on xfce forums and wine problems on wine forums ^ as for burning isos, imgburn is now working on wine, progress !

Top tip: One simply defined question per post and post each query to the correct forum. Please.

I understand that this is perhaps not the way you are thinking but it is the way to get responses. I will quite happily emerge packages I don't use to try and help someone or read manuals, Google or whatever to try and get another perspective on a problem and so will many other people who help on these forums.

However, a long-winded dump of snags is dismaying to read through and it is hard to try and decipher problems and try and help. Most people wont bother.

No, you don't have to go to the upstream forums first, we'll have a crack here - at least its a first stop for solutions. Any failures, then go upstream - that's the point of distro forums. Alternatively, post on both and then link any solutions to the other for future reference.

Also you need to post a bit more info such as package version and arch (eg ~amd64)

Anyway, to start with have you seen this: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/X.Org/Dual_Monitors/Nvidia with respect to metamodes etc? From what I can gather there are quite a few potential gotchas there, you may be better off looking into the Wine stop mouse leaving snag.

Please break your problems up into bite sized chunks and repost.

Cheers
Jon
