Hi, all!
I've just got my first graphical Gentoo installation looking good. Thinking it was time to go straight to an X sesion on boot, I followed the wiki and installed slim and xdm. I rebooted my machine and when I get the log-in prompt, my keyboard isn't mapped correctly and this is preventing me from logging-in. I switched to a virtual tty using CTL+ALT+F1 (at least that worked), but unfortunately it seems like X has transferred the keyboard mapping to these sessions too, and now I can't log-on here, either.
I'm struggling to see a way around this and I was so pleased to have got this far. Can anyone help?
I'll switch this box off for now and have a cup of tea and a think.
Many thanks,
Chris. _________________ http://www.whylinuxisbetter.net/ |

Well, login at console, then.
You don't need X for wgetpaste. |

Use a live cd distro to boot up and copy, such as the System Rescue CD or the Gentoo live DVD. _________________ First things first, but not necessarily in that order.
Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box. |

As per my original post, all my keyboard settings are now incorrectly mapped. _________________ http://www.whylinuxisbetter.net/ |

I doubt they're mismapped at boot, so you could simply not run xdm. |

Hi, VoidMage!
As I can't log-in, I think as suggested earlier, I'll have to use a boot disk and do things that way.
Cheers,

You most certainly have the opportunity to press "I" while init scripts are fired during bootup --- that is when your start seeing stuff in colors during boot. Then, at some point, you are asked whether you allow each service to be activated or not.
If that works, just pass on the xdm (and maybe other x-whatever) service and try if you can log in.
To others: could OP's issue have something to do with Xorg GrabDevice'ing the keyboard? |
