After years of absence I return to desktop Linux world and my first priority is to get X to work.
Xorg seems to ditched whole single file conf and made it that much simple (or in this case) harder to get to work.
My laptop is Dell D820.
Nicely booted to fresh kernel, set up X, but my keyboard doesn't work at all.
I have no xorg.conf and I shoved all in either HAL directory or xorg.conf.d

Code:

I apologize for very large log file.

Also is there a way to prevent that weird hardware detection. Why is Synaptics driver looking at PC speaker?[/code]

Do you have USE="acpi" set and acpid not running?

Seems weird that X is looking for a power button, smells acpi related.

I do remember some issues last thine I setup my d820, I remember using nvidia-xconfig to get a decent working config and the tweaked a bit from there. Be sure to look at all of the relevant options.

There's more than one way to handle the problem. First way is to use InputClass sections to disable the devices that are not real keyboard/mouse and enable only real ones. Second way is to disable AutoAddDevices and provide correct InputDevice sections as in good old times. In the latter case you may need to play with udev to automate creation of correct device files. Choose the way you like better. If you searched this forum, then probably you've seen descriptions of both ways. If you didn't, then you may want to do.

Of course, don't forget to check the acpid. Maybe you'll fix everything simply by starting acpid.

The very first thing you should do is to remove everything other than the Nvidia section from your xorg.conf and try again.

No they didn't. You can still use a single xorg.conf. They've actually made things simpler IMO, because now everything can be in xorg.conf, instead of needing both xorg.conf *and* hal fdi files.

X is not actually looking for a power button. It's just that the button is an /dev/input/event* device, and you have wrongly configured that the synaptics driver should load for all /dev/input/event* devices. In particular your "touchpad catchall" section is wrong, probably missing a MatchIsTouchpad

make.conf USE="dell laptop hal nptl xorg xvmc gtk acpi cg nvidia offensive"
acpid wasn't running so I started it (restarted HAL as well)

Files in xorg.conf.d 10-evdev.conf 20-nvidia.conf 50-synaptics.conf

Code:
 cat 10-evdev.conf
#
# Catch-all evdev loader for udev-based systems
# We don't simply match on any device since that also adds accelerometers
# and other devices that we don't really want to use. The list below
# matches everything but joysticks.

Section "InputClass"

        MatchIsPointer "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Driver "evdev"
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "evdev keyboard catchall"
        MatchIsKeyboard "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Driver "evdev"
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "evdev touchpad catchall"
        MatchIsTouchpad "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Driver "evdev"
EndSection

Code:
cat 20-nvidia.conf
Section "Device"
    Identifier     "Device0"
    Driver         "nvidia"
    VendorName     "NVIDIA Corporation"
   # Option "RandRRotation" "true"
   # Option "NoLogo"        "true"
   # Option "Coolbits"      "1"
   # Option "TripleBuffer"  "True"
   # Option "DamageEvents"  "True"

   # Option "BackingStore" "True"
   # Option "DPMS" "True"
   # Option "RegistryDwords" "PerfLevelSrc=0x3333"
EndSection

     Driver "synaptics"

I noticed that 10-evdev.con also has entry for touchpad, I hope it can be safely removed. At this step keyboard is not working. I was thinking of just using old keyboard driver (from old X days)
But I wondering how can I get it in the new system. I will need to refresh how udev.evdev work and how is HAL behaving with the whole policy stuff.

Code:
 cat 10-input-policy.fdi

Exactly like I said, you have it configured so that the synaptics driver loads for all /dev/input/event* devices. And this fails of course, because most of them aren't touchpads. Add
Code:
MatchIsTouchpad "on"
into the above section.

You won't believe it, but that little change solved ALL the problems with input devices.

My keyboard works, my extra buttons work. Even my ALPS trackball works.

THANK YOU.

But I am surprised how it solved all the issues, would need to investigate the mechanics of it.

I still get dri and dri2 errors. Should I bother with them?

It solved them because now X is not trying to interpret your mouse, keyboard, and everything else, as a touchpad. With that part missing, it was applying that section to every input device.

Nope. They're normal, the nvidia blob doesn't use dri/dri2.
