Is there some particular reason why I can merge only the stable mplayer-1.0_rc4_p20091026-r1, even with an entry in /etc/portage/package.keywords?
Code:
media-video/mplayer ~x86

What does it say if you try:
Code:
emerge -pv =media-video/mplayer-1.0_rc4_p20101219

Interesting. It says:
Code:
rick # emerge -pv =media-video/mplayer-1.0_rc4_p20101219

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] media-video/mplayer-1.0_rc4_p20101219  USE="X a52 aalib alsa amr ass cddb cdio dirac dts dv dvd dvdnav enca encode faac faad gif iconv ipv6 jpeg live mad mmx mng mp3 nas network opengl osdmenu png quicktime radio rar real rtc schroedinger sdl shm speex theora toolame tremor truetype twolame unicode vorbis win32codecs x264 xscreensaver xv xvid -3dnow -3dnowext (-altivec) (-aqua) -bidi -bindist -bl (-bluray) -bs2b -cdparanoia -cpudetection -custom-cpuopts -debug -dga -directfb -doc -dvb -dxr3 -esd -fbcon -ftp -ggi -gsm -jack -joystick -jpeg2k -ladspa -libcaca -libmpeg2 -lirc -lzo -md5sum -mmxext -mpg123 -nut -openal -oss -pnm -pulseaudio -pvr -rtmp -samba -sse -sse2 -ssse3 -tga -v4l -v4l2 -vdpau -vidix -vpx -xanim -xinerama -xvmc -zoran" VIDEO_CARDS="-mga -s3virge -tdfx -vesa" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

and a subsequent merge without the -p switch correctly installs the 20101219 version. Even more oddly, the merge is documented as a reinstall, when it is really an update.

Thanks for the help. It would be fascinating to know if others have seen this strange behaviour.
