Hi guys
ive just installed *well reinstalled gentoo see https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=84893* and everything is working great, just merging xfree, but ive got a really annoying problem, i keep getting constant messages saying modprobe cant find various modules for scanners and printers and such like. the reason is i didnt install those modules but i think gentoo is trying to connect to the networks printers etc *would it do that ? im on a corp network* but more importantly how can i stop it from trying to load modules without me asking it to. i also got modprobe errors on boot about various modules that i know i dont need, reason i didnt compile them *cant remember the names of them right now* but what i want to know is how can or what are the files to edit to change what modules are loaded etc ??
thanks alot everyone

/etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel#

you can edit in there. What version kernel are you running?

No help to offer... I'm having the same problem with the latest gentoo-sources kernel since I installed 2 days ago.

I had modprobe erros ("modprobe can't find module... which is needed for...") on boot, ie before login, but I fixed those after reading a post, by adding support for 'real time clock', (from memory..) and recompiling the kernel. That fixed the boot errors and now I can log in as root error free,

BUT... when I log in as a user I get more than a screen full of the same kind of modprobe erros.. all stuff I know I didn't include in the kernel config. Sorry, at work now where I'm forced to use another OS so I can't give details of the errors, but I thought the fact that I only get these errors when I login as a user, while logging in as root gives no errors, might give someobody with more knowledge a clue...

where abouts in the config is that realtime clock? i get the same. is this your first kernel you have built for gentoo?
i cant find where all these modprobes are coming from, there must be a service running trying to find them, its trying to find modules like rio500 and usb/scanner, i know ive not put anything like that into the kernel its bloody weird.
EDIT

EDIT its weird when i used 1.4rc4 i never had any problems like this but since i changed to 1.4, least on this machine ive had nothing but problems, gentoo also feels different. would it matter if i just used 1.4 rc4 for install instead of 1.4?

OK,
I tried to upgrade to r7 on my gateway/firewall machine, and I am having the same problem. (I did not have any issues with modprobe/insmod with r5, but after the upgrade now I am). Not too sure what the problem is. I'm upgrading the system right now emerge -u world --deep. Hopefully this will modify some of base layouts/headers so modprobe will start working again :) If anyone else has any insight please let us know. Thanks.

Have you tried upgrading/downgrading the devfsd? The other thread suggested this, and I haven't had a chance to try it. As soon as my emerge world finishes I will take a look at it (assuming it's not fixed by then). If devfsd is the problem then gentoo-sources-r7 should have the correct devfsd as a dependency/requirement.

I got the same errors, execpt they only seems too happen when I start X, i don't know why the reasion but I did install gentoo from stage1, it asks for the followning at least by modprobe

I get this
Code:

modprobe: Can't locate module /dev/apm_bios

I did try to fix it by adding apm module into kernel-2.4 autoload module, but that doesn't seems too fix it, it also comes whit same module problem whit dsp, and so on, I'm not sure why what is the problem, but I have been trying too recompile my kernel too fix this problem, no luck so far. :( ~I will look better at it when I get home, found this, maybe part of the problem ? not sure tugh, but this only happens after I start X server for some reasion, anyone else seen that ? (I did edit this post)

i have the same problem with modprobe, but mine just doesnt load mousedev. I've seen some workarounds here @ the forum, like add the mousedev module @ /etc/hotplug/blacklist. I even tried to recompile the kernel (2.4.20-gentoo-r7)with all the modules i needed for an usb mouse and still nothing.
I think i'll try out 1.4-rc4..
