Hello,

I am trying to install Awesome-WM however whenever I start it, whether with SLiM, startx, or xinit (yes, I do have it in .xinitrc), I get a black screen.
And whenever I Ctrl-C to exit, I get an error saying: "E: awesome: main:392: cannot open display".

No one on #gentoo, so far, was able to help me. So, I decided to post a thread.

I wasn't sure what to attach or whatnot, so tell me if you need anything.

Thanks.

ndee,

Welcome to Gentoo.

I'm not an Awesome-WM user, but from your error message it may be an Xorg issue. I can help you check that.
Please post your xorg.conf file if you have one and your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

This will allow us to check your Xorg. If this looks good, we will test with a very simple window manager before getting back to Awesome.

It isn't a Xorg issue since fluxbox/anything else works just fine.

Pretty sure it's just awesome-wm related.

(also, it's ahandy from IRC. Heh, problems don't stop ;))

can you post your .xinitrc please?
and what versions of awesome, xorg etc. are you using?
with a blank config you should at least see the bar etc and open terminals with mod+enter

It was "exec awesome" before I had SLiM and fluxbox. Right now it's exec startfluxbox. But back then it didn't work too.

I can't find .config/awesome/ though, been told it should be there.

Xorg-x11 7.4
Awesome 3.4.9

Well i'm not sure what you did, since a plain awesome wm should always work when Xorg is fine.

Show your Xorg.log after you tried to start awesome and stopped it.

Awesome uses xcb. I don't think fluxbox does. The error is happening in xcb_connect. I would not rule out an xcb error outside of awesome. Does
Code:
awesome -k

tell you the config file is okay? Is your DISPLAY environment variable set to anything unusual?

I started awesome 3.4.8 on xorg 1.9.2 with no trouble. It looks like 3.4.9 is still marked unstable. Have you tried dropping back to the stable version?

awesome -k says the configuration is OK.

Really weird :/
