What else can I try? I've already tried reinstalling rxvt-unicode, reinstalling it with USE=-vanilla, tried reinstalling its direct dependencies, uninstalled/reinstalled xorg-server and its entire dependency tree, done all the revdep-rebuild and stale lafile check stuff...

It's only broken on my laptop though (intel 2.12.0), on my desktop it works fine (radeon 6.13.1).

Try the -cr and/or cursorColor options.
Code:
urxvt -cr Red

Of course that didn't fix it either. I have changed none of the settings since it last worked.

I have the same problem on intel (i915 driver with kms). My workaround is to enable the underline cursor (instead of the block cursor).
Add
Code:
urxvt*cursorUnderline:  true
to your .Xdefaults or .Xresources (which ever one you use).

The same here - on laptop with xf86-video-intel the cursor is invisible in urxvt, on desktop with video-ati it works.

Oh, one more thing - I've just noticed that it may be xcompmgr that causes this - after turning 3D acceleration off the cursor appears.
Do you use any compositing?

I noticed that as well. Cairo-compmgr causes the same problem.

I'm using Xfce's compositing, but it doesn't use 3D at all. Seems like something in the X server's compositing causes problems...

Glad to know it's not just me.

Indeed it seems like xorg-server related problem - they've just resolved it on Arch:

xorg-server 1.9.0.901 hasn't fixed this, unfortunately.

I run xfce, composting, urxvt and I've had no problems.

well, it isn't very strange, because as far as I can see you don't use Intel graphics

I have the same problem with intel driver. Switching to tty1 (ctrl-alt-f1) and going back to Xorg solve the problem. but I have to do it each time i restart X.

Hello,

I'm having the same issue in rxvt-unicode. Cursor is not visible (unless underscore cursor is enabled), irssi window (with default theme) and "make menuconfig" for kernel is also teared up (bg color is only working where there're text).

I tried to revert the following commit http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=8d7b7a0d71e0b89321b3341b781bc8845386def6 with a patch in a local repository. I've tried it with both xorg-server version 1.9.3.902 and 1.9.4. Patching either version (by removing that row) shows no effect.

As with others it's working with my computer with a ATI graphics card but it's not working with intel. Switching between tty1 and Xorg does no good either for me.

Thanks.

This might have fixed it.

I'll try xf86-video-intel-9999 some time today and post back with results (unless someone else does first).

Edit: Nope. Still broken.

Hello,

Found something wierd. I'm using awesome window manager and running urxvt in fullscreen (mod4+f) removes the glitches both with rendering colored background and the standard block cursor. However I'm not sure how this would be of any help.

I'm running xorg-server-1.9.2 and rxvt-unicode-9.04-r1. I've never seen this problem. I don't using composite.
