Hi all,
As I'm working with Sparcs as well...
At home I have two systems:
- UltraSparc 5 270MHz as mail/samba/web server, see signature.
- SparcStation 5, with 96 Mb Ram, currently idle
At work we have a large number of various Sun Blade Workstations. For example there is a sun blade 1000 under my desk. These are used for seismic data processing and seismic software development mainly (I do the latter).
Cheers,

Oh, and by the way.
The SparcStation came with a GDM20D10 20" CRT monitor. I found out it can be connected to a PC with the right equipment. Easiest was to by a special converter cable at www.PCCables.com. (NOTE: I am on no way related to them, other than having bought this cable.)
I have it as secondairy monitor on my Dual AMD. It wasn't easy to set up dual head with my Radeon 9700, but in the end it worked. If you want to know how, look in these forums, I've put everything I found out in here.
Cheers again.

Yup, any 13w3->vga adapter should do. There're stacks on eBay if you prefer, probably cheaper... |

I'm not sure any adapter will do.
See How to connect a SUN 20" Premium (Sony) GDM-20D10 monitor to a PC with Windows 95/98/NT by Hans Leibbrandt. That's where I found the info.
You need a capacitor to adjust the signal as the GDM20D10 is fixed frequency: horizontal and vertical synchronization signals from the PC must be combined to one signal.
So any adapter with the capacitor will do.
Maybe it works without the capacitor with some video cards, I don't know. _________________ "Great minds don't think alike. If they did, the patent office would only have about fifty inventions." - Wally |

Has to be a 13w3->vga adapter, a plain vga->13w3 only one won't work... |

Just got Gentoo up & running on my old Ultra 1e Creator3D (migrated from OpenBSD - don't ask...)
Processor: 170MHz Ultrasparc (zzz.....)
Memory: 224MB
Disk: 73GB Quantum Atlas III
Runs headless, used as mail & file server at home. Works fine (with the HME lockup patch installed). Up for a couple of weeks now, Gentoo seems rock solid, dead easy for a FreeBSD user to grok, even the sound card works! ![Smile :-)](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Ultra5 (unboxed) => 270mhz, 64mb, 4gbhdd, addedd a CDRW and planning to add an USB2 card if supported.
Well, unboxed means i have all the inner parts but not the case.
I must try to adapt it to some other pc case.
Has anybody succeded? _________________ Willy Gardiol

It shoudlnt be that hard, though you might just look on ebay for a junk U5 and take the case and use the rest for parts. |

|
|
I'm thinking about picking up an Ultra 80 from http://www.anysystem.com
What's the performance like on a single 450Mhz machine? I use a g3 ibook 600 for most of my work right now and I'm totally happy with it. Should I expect the Ultra 80 to outperform the ibook? Obviously harddrive reads should be a lot faster. What's the system bus speed on an Ultra 80?
How is linux/gentoo support on 4 processor machines? I've always wanted a really multi-processor machine and it looks like you can buy those 450Mhz procs for 300-500 bucks on ebay . . .
About how long does a gentoo install take on one of these?
All I'm going to use the system for is word processing, email, net surfing and my linux habit. Would it be a better choice to go for a blade 100?
My pc is just a little louder then my playstation2. How loud is an Ultra 80? That power supply and the giant fans by the processors look like they could really put out some noise!
I'm pretty familiar with linux but the sparc hardware is new to me. I've read this whole thread and I'm pleased to hear that you all seem to consider your sparc machines to be so dependible and durable. I'm really looking for a computer to do my writing on that will run with minimal hassles (read hardware failures) for 3 or 4 years. I already use openoffice so I'm set for software.
Thanks for your time.

First, regarding anysytems, they also sell stuff on ebay and it usually goes for HALF what they sell it for on the website so I would consider the ebay route instead.
No experience with the ultra 80, but I do have a blade 100. Have had no end of problems with it although I have installed gentoo on several ultra 5's and legions of x86 stuff. Don't know if the problem is with the kernel or the release but it always locks up.
If all you want is wp, email, net and linux, you might just consider an ultra 5 or 10. I find them to bery zippy although they take along while to compile.
My 2 cents. |

I find my 300MHz Ultra AXe to be very snappy. It compiles things relatively quickly, the only time it starts to slow down is when doing heavy disk activity. _________________ Inspiron 4100 & Sun UltraAXe

Recently made the switch from Aurora to Gentoo on my Sparcs:
Ravell:
Ultra2, 2x 300Mhz, 512MB RAM, Creator3D Series 3, 9.1GB internal, 32X CD, 2x X1065A UDWIS/S each attached to a RSM214 chassis with 7x 9.1GB HD's.
HocusPocus:
Ultra1E, 167MHz, 256MB RAM, Creator3d Series 1, 9.1GB HD, 4X CD.
MissBliss:
SS20, 2x 75Mhz, 192MB RAM, 8MB SX Graphics, 4.5GB HD, 4X CD, X1059A Fast Ethernet.
Looking to pick up another system sometime soon too, not sure what I want to get yet though. Something SMP and a little snappier that my U2. |

No place cheap. I did some research before buying mine and they go for around $300 through Sun resellers. One problem I have with it is that it doesn't turn off, I have to pull the plug. However when I shutdown gentoo, it does power the board down. On a PC you can hold in the power button and it shuts off. Since this board is mostly Ultra 5/10 hardware maybe it is similar but I've never owned an ultra before so I can't tell for sure. _________________ Inspiron 4100 & Sun UltraAXe

Well, I was hoping with this:
http://www.promise.com/product/product_detail_eng.asp?productId=87&familyId=3
But after looking at the specs, it says that it's 66MHz PCI...
hmmmm, I may not be stuffing 200GB's into it after all. I wonder if it can run at 33MHz? I'm not so much interested in raw speed, just ability to use really large drives. |

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums, to Gentoo, and to SPARC. I'm currently using an x86 desktop with XP/Red Hat dual-boot and an x86 laptop running Win98, and I have a SparcStation 5 waiting for the good stuff at home. 110mHz, 256mb, 4.2gb w/CD-ROM. Nice lookin' box, not blazing fast, but for browsing and text editing, should be fine. Have a keyboard/mouse and 13w3 converter on the way, and am hoping to use it for general useage and playing around with SAMBA later if possible and integrate it into my little routing lab.
Gentoo supports DHCP, right? |

Ultra 10, I think it's a 400Mhz UltraSparc.
sunny linux # cat /proc/cpuinfo
cpu : TI UltraSparc IIi (Sabre)
fpu : UltraSparc IIi integrated FPU
promlib : Version 3 Revision 25
prom : 3.25.2
type : sun4u
ncpus probed : 1
ncpus active : 1
Cpu0Bogo : 878.18
Cpu0ClkTck : 000000001a39de00
MMU Type : Spitfire
1 9GB and 1 10GB drive, with 128MB ram. Some kind of integrated video and sound which both seem to work OK after wrestling my X/sound configuration with snippets and hints from the net.
I even got one of them Intel CPU "pc on a card" things in here, although I am pretty sure Linux can make no use of it.
I will say this thing takes forver to compile just about anything. Kernel was a doozy. Mozilla was even worse. But KDE and Gnome take the cake. I do wish I could get this Openoffice thing built right though. |

That's a 440, unless you've overclocked it.

Yeah, utterly useless. Stick it on ebay

Hrm. You probably need the ~sparc gcc to compile Openoffice, but I'm not entirely sure there... Bazik's your guy for that. |

Time to add to my list, I have just obtained an Ultra 10 shell with everything minus CPU, HDD, and RAM, so I'm going to piece something else together, hopefully with a 440mHz and at least 256mb. I'd like to use it as a server eventually (on Gentoo, of course!).
EDIT: I just got my hands on an old SparcServer 1000E with 2x85mHz, 256mb, 4x2.1gb. Anyone know if Gentoo will run well on a dual cpu rig like this? _________________ 2400+/512mb/80gb WinXP

hi,
i got a sparcstation 10 / 2x 50mhz / 128mb / 2.1gb hd -> running a plain old suse 7.3
this machine is currently used for mail, ftp and web.
but santa was a nice old man and brought an ultra 5 / 360mhz / 256mb / 30gb hd
as all other distributions seemed to be totally outdated / crap i tried gentoo for the first time.
as far as i can see, everything works fine and the ultra will asap be no.1 for mail, ftp and web. _________________ don't let the SUN go down on me (george michael) - www.hasipara.de |

I have a SS5 which I'm setting up right now. I'm about 3 hours into the bootstrap, so no name yet. I currently have 64MB RAM and I'd like to bring that up to the 256MB max. Does anyone have a decent-priced source for these?

Ive bought 99% of all my sparc stuff on Ebay. There isnt alot right now (because of the holidays i assume) but normally you can find anything you need there. I think there is a fair amount of memory up there now though. Alot of that stuff is priced decent, but some of it is ridiculously overpriced, and occasionally you will run across an INCREDIBLE bargain. Just research for a while to see what items are going for. |

I think that is a Sun 4d system which doesn't work with Linux. Possibly NetBSD might work.
Edit: Actually it does work with linux. It is just an older system. _________________ Inspiron 4100 & Sun UltraAXe
