Since not everyone visits us on irc, we're in the dark about some of the people's machines, and what goodies they have stuffed into them.
This thread would give us a nice feeler to know what people have, and narrowing down issues when they arise.
Heres my mess:
peregrine:
Ultra5 - 360Mhz, 256Meg, 30Gig drive, Sun SCSI, Conner DAT, on a SGI 20" monitor (Main machine) (Kernel 2.4.22-sparc-r0)
osprey:
Ultra5 - 360Mhz, 128Meg, 8.4Gig drive, headless (mostly does distcc and some other testing) (Kernel 2.4.21-sparc-r1)
kiwi:
Sparcstation20 - 2x75Mhz, 228Meg, 2x4.3Gig drives (testing sparc32, and building stages) (Kernel 2.4.22-sparc-r0)
Soon to have an Ultra2, 2x200 (haven't thought of a machine name for it yet) _________________ -Todd <todd@gentoo.org>

After doing many x86 installations I'm finally playing around with the sparc. Before I do anything too crazy I want to try with my Ultra 2. I'm starting to regret it though since its so slow. I'm doing a Kernel compile right now...(4th time...I can't seem to get the kernel under 3.6 megs )
Thats all for now...I'm sure there will be more in the future.

Similar story with me, really - got fed up with x86 hardware and decided that there had to be something better
Perused eBay for a half hour or so and managed to win a rather neat little Ultra 10 440MHz. The rather tired-sounding 9.1GB HDD was replaced with a pair of Seagates (40GB and 80GB 7200RPM beasties) and Gentoo run up.
The whole thing went from stage one to running system in a day and a bit and is presently running rings around the responsiveness of Solaris.
Just so you know, IMHO the Gentoo install is approximately 100 times less painful than FreeBSD / NetBSD - both of which have yet to muster a proper console driver...
Going along the lines of odd hardware, I've also just bought an HP C180 PA-RISC box - should be fun

I only have 1 Sparc at home.
hostname krypton
Ultra 2 Enterprise
Dual 300 Mhz CPUs
384 Megs RAM
a lowly CG6 video card
Single 9 gig SCSI drive
Sun 17 inch monitor
Basically it's an out of box Ultra 2 Enterprise except for adding 256 megs more RAM and a 2nd CPU (and Gentoo of course!). |

i just entered the realm of sparc as well. only one box (so far!):
Name: bubu
Type: Ultra 2
Procs: Dual 300Mhz
RAM: 128MB
HDD: 4.3BG seagate (w/ solaris on it)
Video: Creator3d
Monitor: Trinitron via 13W3->HD15 adapter
currently running gentoo diskless, booting kernel over tftp and nfsrooted. next investment is *definitely* more RAM for this guy... he kinda crawls due to the measely 128MB in him... sigh. _________________ overlays - Use at your own risk. I've got a random number of Sunblade 1000 with dual UltraIII 900mhz with 1.5 Gb of RAM. I say random because the project that they were used on died so they were just stored in my office. I've started playing around with them installing gentoo and such. Now that they have gentoo on them all the sudden people are interested in using them again haha. Oh well. Probabably for the best. I don't think my boss would have been happy that I was using a $15K machine as a nethack server, but its not like anyone wanted the things then. |

I'm a n00b to sparcs. I picked up a Sun Ultra 1 at Defcon in Las Vegas.
It's a NASA handme down I think.
143 mhz 64mb of RAM.
And i've yet to compile a kernel small enough to boot with SILO. it's sad i think it must take 8 hours to compile the kernel. Shouldn't it be possible to compile a kernel on a faster machine then just ftp onto the sparc box?

At work I'm on an Ultra10, 440mhz IIi, 1 gig ram, 2x seagate 20g drives, creator3d, used as a workstation (lots of development)
At home I've got a Ultra2, 2x200mhz Ultrasparc I's, 2x 18g 10k scsi, 1g ram, creator3d video, also workstation.
I've also got an E450, 4x450mhz US2's, 3g ram, 2x 18g IBM 10k drives internal, e1000 gig ethernet going to a NetApp filer, nfs mount 1.2 tb. This one is a local file server (as well as local gentoo mirror), plus centralized logging.
I've got a couple Netra 1405's running gentoo at various times, mostly for testing of things (and showing the speed improvements vs Slow-laris), but they spend most of thier time in a pile.

Done a lot x86 installations. Have done a lot of x86 hardware troubleshooting. Basicly I've had it with x86. Th SS20 I received as a gift was a warm welcome to experiment with Sparc.
Nowadays it is equiped with 2 170 MHz cpu's and max RAM ( I found a really nice offer on ebay). Only thing it is missing is a larger HD and a second ethernet card. It is not running gentoo but openbsd.
As soon as it has a second eth it will be be functioning as firewall/router.
Second Sun was also a gift..and a really nice gift: Ultra60 with dual 450MHZ UltraSparcIIi and 512 MB RAM + 19 GB seagate scsi disc. Oh and a nice 20" SUn monitor.
It had gentoo installed. But unfortunatly the installer of Solaris 9 wants to use the whole disc. Gentoo has been re-installed yesterday and I'm making it ready for replacing my current Athlon 900 desktop.
Unfortunatly I'm getting a lot of access violation problems on /usr/lib/perl/5.0.0/base.pm with a lot of differen packages.
It will take a while to get Gentoo on the Ultra60 ready for replacing my current desktop, but it will be worth the wait. Finally I can dump that lousy x86. |

I'm pretty new to Gentoo. Had some sparcs for a while, but was running Aurora, or Debian linux on them.
Ultra5 that im trying to put gentoo on, once i get my boot problem sorted, I'll be done. 384mb ram, 80gb ide, oem cdrom.
Axil 320 (sparc20 clone) needs ram, and hdd
And last but not least, an old IPX. Have no clue what im going to do with it, but it looked neat so... I did add an ethernet card to it, so its ready for something. |

Just got started with Gentoo, but I've sorta gone nuts. So far, I've dropped it onto two Ultra 5's, one Ultra 10, and am currently emerging away on the Ultra 2.
Loving it so far on all of 'em, but I gotta admit Gentoo from Stage 1 is a lot more fun on the multi-processor Ultra 2. |

You are as bad as me my friend.
But Sun hardware is extremely reliable in my experience, that is why I like it.
