Anyone seen this? KDE kicks me out to the log-in if I try to play a mov file from the Hawaii USGS site. At first I thought it might be a firefox issue causing it so I downloaded it to my hard drive and tried opening it with VLC. Same thing - there's two videos I've tried with same results.

I'm running ~AMD64.

Here's the links:
http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/kilauea/update/archive/2011/Jan/20110306_0682_torr_small.mov
http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/kilauea/update/archive/2011/Mar/PuuOoCollapse_20110305_small.mov

What log do you think I should look at? /var/log/messages says "kdm[2507]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly"

Anyone else experience this?

Well, I rebooted and it is working now... DOH!

(it wasn't a nice reboot - I locked up hard so had to hit the reset)

Shall I mark it as resolved then? Might have been a recent update or something that needed a cleanup with a reboot or something. Haven't done a kernel update in a few days and have rebooted since then, so no idea.

Thanks guys for looking - really appreciate it.

I'm sorry to reopen this thread, but I can confirm the KDE crash upon playing these clips vith VLC.
Randomly there is no crash, but then the player shows 2 video streams just like Cachorro's screenshot.

Other video players (mplayer and kaffeine) doesn't complain at all and play the videos perfectly.

Filed a bug at KDE → https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=268386

Just an update: KDE devs answered with this:
Quote:
If you are taken back to the login screen, this means the X server has crashed,
not the applications running within it. The very likely cause is a bug in the
video drivers or one of other components of the graphics stack such as Mesa or
DRI.

As a matter of fact, my Xorg.0.log.old shows the following:
Code:
Backtrace:
[ 15053.563] 0: /usr/bin/X (xorg_backtrace+0x28) [0x4a21c8]

I guess is VLC to blame for this :? , so I opened a new ticket at VLC's → http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/4581

Once again, I was barking at the wrong tree:
VLC devs wrote:
Both videos work fine here with both VLC 1.1.7 and master. This bug is probably dependent on the Xorg version

It is notable that they have two video tracks, one with actual Kilauea footage, the other with a static black&white USGS logo. VLC by default will show both tracks, which most players do NOT do.

In any case, a segmentation fault in Xorg can only be caused by an Xorg bug. If it happens with any driver, it is probably a bug in the device-independent X. You can file Xorg bugs on the FreeDesktop bugzilla.

I don't feel like to file a new bug at FreeDesktop bugzilla, since probably this issue has been fixed in later version of Xorg (I'm using the "stable" xorg-x11-7.4-r1 and xorg-server-1.9.4 in portage).

Has anyone here had it crash on anything besides an ATI card?

No crash here on nvidia, no crash for the fella above on intel.
Two confirmed crashes on ATI cards, one with fglrx, the other seemingly with radeon.

my system has become unstable lately anyway- last couple days. Looking through Xorg log and xsession-errors I didn't see anything jumping out. A couple times an evening the computer will hard lock up - can move the mouse cursor around sometimes but clicking doesn't do anything. Can't alt-tab or ctrl-alt-backspace (that sometimes causes the cursor to also lock up). Othertimes the cursor splits into a double image of a cursor and it hard locked - sometimes that happens when trying to resize a window.

Don't know if this relates to any ATI bug causing X to fail. Just extra data points.

ah...well that's a whole different can of worms I suppose
I get stuff like that too

i noticed if i change desktop effects alt+tab animation to do the 'flip switch' instead of the default box thing, it brings things to such a crawl that KDE forcibly disables compositing
but i just assume this is a side-effect of ~arch

i have other little locks and hang-ups, but none annoying enough to really bother me.

NB: what about Alt+SysRq+K whenever it locks you out like that?

Haven't tried the Alt+SysRq+K yet, will file that away for next lockup. Hopefully my keyboard will still be able to communicate. Save your work early and save often - seems things so far have come back fine from my resets to date.
