For some reason, I've had some problems with sound quality while using OSS emulation for my i810 based audio card. Basically, after weeks of work, I was able to clean up the sound through a nasty hack that created more problems than it solved. At any rate, I've been using the Xine back-end for Rhythmbox as Xine seems to plays better with ALSA for me than does Gstreamer.

However, when I tried to upgrade to Rhythmbox 0.8.1, the Xine USE flag seemed to disappear.

Code:
kaput@gentoo kaput $ sudo emerge -pv rhythmbox

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild   R   ] media-sound/rhythmbox-0.8.1  -faad -flac +mad +oggvorbis +pda

Was this intentional? Or did something get messed up in the ebuild?

they droped support for it. I kind of agree with this as right now there are three main multimedia backends: xine, mplayer, and gstreamer. They should stick with one until it reaches a very stable state.

Are they actually *planning* to reimpliment support for Xine-libs in the future? Or they pretty much planning on sticking with Gstreamer?

I believe that the xine implementation was a patch for the period that gstreamer was/is instable, the intention is that it will become totally a gstreamer application.

Hrmm. Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll stick with Rhythmbox 8.0 for a bit, then it'll be off to Muine. :P

Well, I got RB working with Gstreamer just fine. I just changed the Gstreamer defaults using Gconf (I *hate* naming schemes like this). I simply changed the "audiosink" and "audiosrc" variables. You can choose from piping it through ESD or just running the audio straight to ALSA.
