the programming practices warnings are very common and seem pretty much meaningless as far as we users are concerned. Recommend continue with
Code:
emerge -e --keep-going system

Code:
emerge -e --keep-going --resume system

Quote:
emerge - system
Would be a typo either in the command issued or in your report here

if you get "nothing to resume" redo
Code:
emerge -e --keep-going  system

the --keepgoing and --resume make it easier to work through until the entire content of system has been redone
actually it may be more efficient to wipe the gentoo partitions and do the install over.

I did
Code:
emerge -e --keep-going --resume system
and
Code:
emerge -e world
without errors but I got the following error message
Code:
(chroot) sysresccd / # USE="symlink" emerge =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.36-gentoo-r5
!!! '=sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.36-gentoo-r5' is not a valid package atom.
!!! Please check ebuild(5) for full details.

what does it mean?
Tnx

typo, try
Code:
emerge =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.36-r5

then run
Code:
eselect kernel list | wgetpaste
ls -l /usr/src | wgetpaste
and post url's returned
need to check names on the kernel source directories

looks good.
boot sysresccd, enter the chroot, mount the gentoo partitions, then:
Quote:
You first need to select your timezone so that your system knows where it is located. Look for your timezone in /usr/share/zoneinfo, then copy it to /etc/localtime. Please avoid the /usr/share/zoneinfo/Etc/GMT* timezones as their names do not indicate the expected zones. For instance, GMT-8 is in fact GMT+8.

Code Listing 1.1: Setting the timezone information
Code:
ls /usr/share/zoneinfo

(Suppose you want to use GMT)
Code:
cp /usr/share/zoneinfo/GMT /etc/localtime

Check time
Code:
date

set date and time, if needed, using date MMDDhhmmYYYY syntax (Month, Day, hour, minute and Year).
Code:
zcat /proc/config.gz > /usr/share/genkernel/arch/x86/kernel-config
genkernel all
when genkernel finishes pick up the handbook at: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?style=printable&full=1#book_part1_chap8

bootsysresccd, mount gentoo partitions, enter the chroot
Code:
grep -i gzip /usr/src/linux/.config
post results; expect to see:
Quote:
CONFIG_HAVE_KERNEL_GZIP=y
CONFIG_KERNEL_GZIP=y
then
Code:
emerge xz-utils lzma
genkernel all

Not quite, here it is:

It worked, thanks.
Now I am trying to set up the boot loader but I can't modify /boot/grub/grub.conf because it says it is a read only file system.
How can i get around this?

P.s. I am not trying to modify the rescue cd files.

Code:
mount -o rw /dev/sda1 /boot

Just change your partition according to your system.

if remounting in the chroot fails. continue per the handbook until it has you exit the chroot and unmount the gentoo partitions, then remount them,
Code:
df -h
to check /mnt/gentoo/boot is mounted;
Code:
nano /mnt/gentoo/boot/grub/grub.conf
and edit.

I managed to make it boot, now i have some probs with the wireless connections.
Code:
iwlist scan

returns the list of available networks. I emerged dhcpcd and ipw2200-firmware.
My /etc/conf.d/net reads as follows:
Code:
essid_eth1="EleVi"
key_EleVi="s:whatever enc open"

I also added ipw, ipwireless and ipw2200 to
Code:
/etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

The problem is that at boot dhcpcd identifies the right essid but then it says 'waiting for carrier', then times out and does not connect.
Any suggestions?

I will assume your wifi interface is named eth1, let me know if idifferent.
Do you have internet using a wired connection?
Does iwlist scan in fact tell you that your router, EleVi , is open?
Have you installed a desktop?
Does your laptop have an on/off (sometimes function keys) for the wifi radio? Perhaps an on/off light?
what does
Code:
iwconfig eth1
show?
try:
Code:
/etc/init.d/net.eth1 stop
ifconfig eth1 down
ifconfig eth1 up
iwconfig eth1 mode managed
iwconfig eth1 txpower auto
iwconfig eth1 essid "EleVi"
dhcpcd eth1

for future use
Code:
emerge wpa_supplicant

Code:
nano /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
Edit to
Quote:
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=wheel
update_config=1
