One thing that I like very much about Gentoo is its tracking of dependencies, making things work almost out of the box so to speak.
On the users mailing list recently, someone mentioned that they were working on an ebuild for either kinput2 or canna. It would be great to be able to do a simple emerge and then be able to do Japanese. I'm not capable of tracking all the dependencies or writing the ebuild--but I imagine that the necessary packages would be kinput2, canna, the kon program (which enables one to at least read, although not input, Japanese in console mode) at least one set of fonts, and probably the i18n package. (Although, in RH, at least, the Japanese seems most designed for working in KDE, I'm easily able to use it in fluxbox, etc)
I hope this is the correct forum in whcih to post this
Sincerely,
