|
|
Hey, I'm trying to boot off of the gentoo-ppc livecd and booting to the hard drive, because i think the openfirmware is messed up or something (i cannot boot off the hard drive, and cannot get into openfirmware using the command-option-O-F thing)
so what i wanna do is, at that boot: menu, tell it where my kernel is or whatever, and boot it like that
can i do this?
i know the OF address... i used ofpath /dev/hdb4 (to find the root partiition, right?) _________________ fq |

to get to open firmware you need to hold down command-option-o-f for quiet a while and it will look like it's not going to boot at all and so you are like grr stupid computer and then you let go and it boots to not-of because you let go. hold it for a long while see if that helps.
as for booting from the boot menu, try:
/dev/hdb4,/boot/vmlinux
i don't think it uses ofpaths because yaboot is after open firmware (ybin is before though)
good luck |

nope....
#1 it wont go into open firmware at all.. to be honest, i dont think its even there on my computer, or its corrupt.. because i can NEVER get this machine to boot off anything except a bootable cd.. (hence this post)
#2 yaboot does use open firmware paths.. but for the sake of arguement i tried that, and it said:
Code: | cd:-1,/dev/hdb4,/boot/vmlinux: Unknown or currupt file system |
so yeah... it doesnt understand linux /dev paths
ummm im just throwing this out there but would anyone know how i can either check to see if my openfirmware is indeed dead or is there a way of re-installing it or re-implementing it....
otherwise, getting a bootable cd that has a yaboot.conf that will automatically boot the hard drive would be GREAT (several attempts havent booted the system into anything)
another hint that OF is non-existant, when i try to boot with the full OF path in yaboot, it wont work there either? so yeah anyone have any ideas it would be great![/code] _________________ fq |
