So what is a geek to you?
Sounds like something taken right out of an all american high school movie; if you're a geek, you're screwed! So please tell me what you mean by a non-geek gentoo user. How does one qualify to be a non-geek?
Are YOU a non-geek...? |

If you don't have the slightest idea why this thing even boots and stare in awe and wonder every time the x server starts.
I qualify. |

I get surprised faces once in a while for being able to fix computer problems. That's one of the reasons I wouldn't think of myself as a geek. |

Which is...?
Chances are if you are here, you are a geek. If you did a gentoo stage one installation, chances are you are quite a geek, not because it is that difficult (well, it is a little), but because of your priorities. _________________ To err is to be human, don't forget to include "errno.h" in your consciousness. |

But as with all chances, there's always the odd one... |

Actually, I have always been amazed that people who are computer literate are immediately labeled as a geeks. Yeah, some are as I have seen at the first Linux meeting I attended. Others are not though I am one of them
And lastly, I am a former Marine so if anyone accuses me of being a geek, RUN!!! |

Some like to be geek, others like to be non-geek. For me it's not a matter of good/bad. |

This generalization of geek being good or bad comes from stupid american teenage movies like "revenge of the nerds". So is the steriotypical image of a pale white man with no social skills. _________________ To err is to be human, don't forget to include "errno.h" in your consciousness. |

I'm a 2nd. Senior Black Belt in TaeKwonDo... And I am a geek, geeks can be normal... I can whip your butt, or so I think ... I play football with friends, run laps around the block, etc ... And I know C/C++, PHP, VB, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, etc... and I am still half normal...
Pzilla is right... Almost everyone is a geek, my dad is an engineer, knows a lot about cars, so he is classified as geek I suppose... And if you installed Gentoo yourself without help of other people and you understood when you followed the manual (you didn't sit down and just go step by step, not knowing what the heck you were doing)... then you're a geek...
And I think it's good to be a geek, you're smarter than your friends...
EDIT: Take that back, when you are smarter, you spend time helping out your friends install X (no not XFree) |

I've asked Google Sets what can be predicted from "geek" and "linux".

Borg
Star Wars |
There are no Marines there, only the Borg. |

That it is so true, unfortunately. It is amazing how even today, athletes are highly praised but those who do very academically are not. [/quote] |

I will meet you behind the parking lot after school. Winner gets to take the loser's laptop:wink:

I know Perl/CGI. I had to take a graduate computer programming class to fulfill my Information Systems requirement. Still a beginner though but this course allowed me to pick up PHP rather quickly. I taught myself HTML and right now I am self teaching myself XHTML and CSS. Got to meet those W3C and Section 508 web standards:)

Took me 4 tries to get a fully functioning system. Actually, I got it on the 3rd try but I thought my computer was messed up when I started X Windows so I reinstalled it. This forum helped quite a bit (better then the mailing list I might add).

Well you ought to know this guy Jared... Not too smart... he couldn't figure out (after I told him a few times to get Roger Wilco), how to get Roger Wilco working after installing it... I said "Open Internet Explorer"... and he went blank, so I said "Err, just go to www.rogerwilco.com"... And he got there pretty quick... So after that it took him a few minutes to find the link to download with my help... Just thought I should share that experience... happens often too with any app...
He also thinks I am too smart, fixing his computer multiple times, so I am pestered with his and my computer problems...
Q: Did you understand the commands or just follow along? |

Yes, I admit it, I am a geek.
However I do have a social life, so a social geek. :p _________________ Really, I'm not out to destroy Microsoft. That will just be a completely unintentional side effect.

My notebook told me to get out of the room while installing Gentoo Linux. When the installation was completed, my notebook called me on my cell. |
