So...how 'bout it? (note: in this context UPS=Uninteruptable Power Supply)
I'm curious who has gotten it to work. (I'm esspecially interested in seeing if anyones gotten a tripplite ups to work...but all UPS users are welcome).
Please try to keep the United Parcel Service jokes to a minimum.

Plugging it in should do it.
If you want fancy stuff like automatic shutdown and monitoring, you should look around a bit, to make sure there is Linux support. A quick search of Portage gave three UPS monitoring tools: apcupsd, nut and powerd. Take a look at what UPSs those support. |

something is strange about tripplite ups's...it requires the software before it'll work...strange huh?

I have an el cheapo UPS that a coworker gave me this summer. I haven't bothered with any of the fancy-schmancy features (assuming it HAS those features). I just plugged my fileserver and router into the thing. Incidentally, with the fallout from Hurricane Isabel, we had some flaky power for a short while yesterday. The power only went out here for a split second (that I know of). My desktop computer restarted, but the fileserver kept on going. So I know it works. Woohoo.

That is very strange. Sounds like a "winups" to me. I didn't know such a beast existed. Thanks for the warning. 
I've got a Belkin Universal 1200AVR. I bought is back in December and it has been great so far. Even came with linux software that works. Well, mostly works anyway. The installer is kind of dumb, installes some files with weird perms etc., but fixing the little problems and getting it working wasn't really a problem. It even theoreticaly can shutdown several pc's over the network. But I've found the networking features to be somewhat unreliable. Been meaning to write my own software to do the network stuff but havent gotten around to it.
I just bought a "Best Power Patriot" 450Va ups from Tiger Direct, it was only $20. (So what's your excuse for not having an ups now? ) I haven't tried hooking up the monitoring cable yet. But it's just a "dumb" ups so any of the software of that sort out there should work. |

sure thing...it does in fact come with "linux" software version though...it's an rpm and using rpm2tgz I found out it uses a strange structure...so it's basically unusable without heavily modifying every stinking file...
Worked wonders in my windows days...but i think it's time for me to get a real UPS. I'll defenitely look into Belkin...thx.

I actually have two UPS devices in my room, one for my workstation one for my server.
Workstation is an AMD 800 Mhz T-Bird, along with a 19" monitor, and the sever is a 600 Mhz PIII with a 17" monitor used via a KVM switch for Xinerama  .
One has a data port, but I'm too lazy to bother. The problem I'm having though, one of the batteries died, and holds no charge. I've had the same problem with my robots (FIRST Robotics), where we made a 12 VDC battery turn into a 9 VDC volt battery over time (Lead Sealed Acid batteries). Anyone know where to buy a new battery? |

My APC UPS ES 725 works just fine with apcupsd. The automatic shutdown may be funky - I shut it down myself in the August blackout when there was under 5 minutes remaining juice.
Its odd though. I plugged my K6-2 into the same UPS and it isn't staying up when the UPS loses power, but my server works fine.

Just open it up(heed the warnings, there is stuff in there that could zap you), get the info off the battery, and google for it. Lots of places sell those types of batteries, just a matter of finding the right one for your particular ups. Of course an "exact" replacement might be difficult to get. |
