I use as both.
1. server[k6-2 450, 128MB]: apache (still 1.3), nfsd, openssh, proftpd
2. workstation [Athlon 1.3, 512MB]: gnome2, blah blah blah

In the near future I'm willing to get another box as a file server (smb, nfs). :)

I'm currently using it as my desktop machine, but I'm thinking about replacing my RH machine with gentoo and making a smoothwall firewall.

I have talked my wife into using linux also :)

She I might be all linux before to long :D

I have linux as both my desktop and a server. The desktop does, well, desktoppy things and the server runs the usual stuff. IE: apache, php, ftp, nfs, samba, dns, mail and..... i think that's it... Wouldn't trade my set up for anything....

I run 2 Gentoo desktops (one at home and one at work) where I have some tools, like sshd and apache installed.

I would also create a gentoo server for home use, but it is no alternative at work, because it takes too long to install (and I am the only Gentoo User there :-) )

Box #1 Celeron 1.7Ghz, 500Mb RAM, ATI Radeon 7500. Gentoo server & desktop.
- web server (apache2+php+mysql), mail server (postfix+courier-imap), file server (samba), ssh, ftp, tightvnc (via xinetd services). I like xfce4 right now for my desktop.

Box #2 Athlon 2500 500Mb RAM, ATI Radeon 9600Pro, RAID (2 drive stripe), Audigy Gamer +6.1 speaker system. Windozzze XP gaming box.

And a pretty little KVM switch to go between...

I sure like my toys. ;-)

I use Gentoo as a dual boot desktop, a file server, and a webserver.

Pure desktop...without a static IP, a server doesn't do me too much good.

Server - Email, Web, Shell, DNS, Remote Storage, IRC (threepwood.isomerica.net)
Router/DHCP/DNS/etc (kipper.isomerica.net)
Workstation and storage server (vindaloo)
Laptop (gryphon)
Toy (vega, a Sun Microsystems SparcStation 5 110MHz (extremely slow! It took around a week to install.))

You can always use a service like http://www.dyndns.org/ or http://www.no-ip.com (I personally use dyndns.org, it works best with my router which is a D-link DI-624)

I only use it as a dekstop, and as a server that only servers localhost
I want to host a site on it, but my upload speed is way too slow, and I'm not allowed of my parents

I use gentoo on my desktop, am currently converting my server to gentoo, and my dad runs gentoo on his desktop. I wish Dad would let me install gentoo on his other comp. I have another comp that I run FC2 on, but that is because it is too slow for gentoo.
