after halt/shutdown/reboot notebook correctly does all the stuff needed, but won't turn off power

asus k50ni
kernel-2.6.37-gentoo-r4 (with desktop/kde profile)

any ideas?

Could you please be a little more specific? Doesn't shutdown as in it "hangs" durning shutdown or goes back to boot menu , or leaves you with blank screen ...

I mean it correctly stopped daemons,romouted filesystems ro, etc.
wrote "[time] Restarting system." and nothing else happened
it got stuck like that

ok, now there is a progress:
when I use halt/shutdown notebook turns off as wished
but when I use reboot, it gets stuck like before, but prints one more empty line :?: :?: :?:

Can you use magic sysrq (alt+sysrq+b) to reboot when the problem occurs?

Please try a recent -git kernel (2.6.39-rc3+). I remember a patch
going in which makes linux behave like windows when powering off
or rebooting (since windows is what bios vendors usually validate
against).
