VMWare gentoo migration issues

Hello-

So I am trying to migrate a gentoo virtual machine from one vmware server to another, but when i try to run it on the new server it just starts at the grub> prompt
I tried running kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.17-gentoo-r8 root=/dev/hda3 (command it ran in the old vmware server) , then the boot command. but that makes the system halt

here is the cat /proc/version output: Linux version 2.6.17-gentoo-r8 (root@livecd) (gcc version 4.1.1 (Gentoo 4.1.1)) #2 Sat Sep 23 08:08:05 PDT 2006

I am knowledgeable enough to make my away around the linux server, but am not familiar with gentoo in depth

any help would be greatly appreciated. if you need more information, let me know and i can find it for you. i need to migrate 3 of these machines for work and am the person who originally set these up is no longer at the company.
