I installed the new kenrel 2.6 and for sound i chose to compile as module the AlSA drivers.
I followed the instructions that I found on this forum on how to make ALSA work with the new kernel.
I think it works fine. I have sound and all the staff, besides the message that I get when I run dmesg.
I have Asus P4PE with a soundcard on board, with the following specification
ADI1980 6-channel CODEC
I read that in order to make the soundcard to work I need to load the i810 chip (snd_intel8x0).
One thing that bothers me, besides the above message, is that dmesg does not give me much informations about the soundcard. When I was using the OSS drivers (kernel 2.4) I was getting informations about the channels and how many are activated. Now, the only thing that I get is
ALSA sound/pci/ac97/ac97_codec.c:1739: AC'97 0:0 analog subsections not ready
Do you know why?
I was thinking of updating the alsa-utils and alsa-libs to 1.0 version, now I have 0.98. Another thing that I could do is to disable the sound support in the kernel and install the latest alsa drivers. Finally, I could go back to OSS drivers.
What is your opinion?
Thank you in advance for your time |

If you look at /usr/src/linux/include/sound/version.h you will see that the drivers that come with 2.6 kernel are 0.97. Pretty old!!!
So, the solution to my problem is to disable the ALSA drivers in the kernel and install the the alsa-drivers from the web page.
Do you think is going to help?
I also saw that in the latest version they fixed a bug in the module that I need. Nice!!!! |
