1.) compile each one and see which one you like.
2.) screenshot galleries are available via search

here's some examples I found:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=79852&highlight=screenshot
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=48130&highlight=screenshot
and there's more, but reading through all of those pages should keep you busy for a bit.

My personal screenshot is here (warning: it's 1mb is size)
http://www.thecodemonks.com/linux/scrennie.png
...and I'm partial to mucho eye-candy. (ok...so I like transparency a lot)

I'm using kahakai as the window manager...the terminal you see is Eterm and the nifty tool on the right you see if gkrellm (with a bunch of plugins I emerged and skins from the gkrellm site). on the bottom right is the nice and shaded xmms. The backgrounds I got from deviantart and the IRC app you see there is XChat. Also, shaded in the upper left is gaim.

On the bottom of gkrellm are the apps I use most often. Enjoy! :D

as you seem to want a "point and click interface" you'll probably prefer kde or gnome.

just a warning for kde...if you install that it'll take a week for it to compile :P

just a friendly warning

you'll need xfree to get you going, then emerge your chosen window manager. fluxbox seems to be quite popular, and I can recommend kahakai too as it has sweet transparency hehe :)

i like gnome myself, and since 2.4 has just been released i think it's worth a try. one tip though is...

Code:
emerge -p gnome > gnome-install.log

...to get a list of the files it would install so you can unmerge them again if you decide you don't want it. unmerging gnome (or kde) and all it's related apps is a chore unless you know *exactly* what it installed in the first place ;)

run rabbit run:

Code:

emerge xfree
emerge gnome

You are going to need to be a lot more specific as to the problem.

You say "internet isn't working" - can you browse the web? Can you post to the forums? If so, run that emerge xfree. If not, let us know and we can troubleshoot that.
