Hi,
If I download Firefox from the website and run it from my home directory, everything runs fine.
If I emerge firefox, it does not run. There are no error messages or any other symptom. There is just no window.
Code: |
$ emerge --info

try running firefox from terminal, e.g. xterm.
might be a linking bug in xulrunner caused by updates. _________________ ~amd64

I did. There's no error. It's also a new install.
Also, it is not crashing. It is terminating normally before it shows a window.
Code: |
$ firefox -h
Usage: firefox [ options ... ] [URL]
where options include:
X11 options
--display=DISPLAY X display to use
--sync Make X calls synchronous
--no-xshm Don't use X shared memory extension
--xim-preedit=STYLE
--xim-status=STYLE
--g-fatal-warnings Make all warnings fatal
Firefox options
-h or -help Print this message.
-v or -version Print Firefox version.
-P <profile> Start with <profile>.
-migration Start with migration wizard.
-ProfileManager Start with ProfileManager.
-no-remote Open new instance, not a new window in running instance.
-UILocale <locale> Start with <locale> resources as UI Locale.
-safe-mode Disables extensions and themes for this session.
-jsconsole Open the Error console.
-browser Open a browser window.
-private Enable private browsing mode.
-setDefaultBrowser Set this app as the default browser.
$ firefox
$ firefox -safe-mode
$ firefox && echo "It returned a zero"
It returned a zero
$ firefox --Iamnotavalidoption
$

Trying running it with strace to see if you can get a clue based on the output. Also, check the 'ps' output and make sure you don't have old firefox processes hanging out in the background. That could prevent you from running a new one. |

The program exits with an exit code of zero, so there's no output. I have also made sure that there's no other instances running. |

Relating to Yoshi314's post, have you run to confirm that linking is consistent? |

And don't forget to check which program is actually executed when you call "firefox". |

I got the exact same behavior.
strace does not render anything useful from what I can tell. I can see that preferences is being read and soon after it unlinks the lock file and then exits.
I tried revdep-rebuild and reemerged both firefox and xulrunner.
Code: |
www-client/firefox-3.6.20 USE="alsa dbus ipc java libnotify -bindist -custom-cflags -custom-optimization -debug -gnome -startup-notification -system-sqlite -wifi" |
Also tried to remove my ~/.mozilla directory.
Tried to start as root.
Code: |
user@hostl ~ > which firefox
/usr/bin/firefox
user@host ~ > ls -l /usr/bin/firefox
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 okt 6 21:24 /usr/bin/firefox -> /usr/lib64/firefox/firefox
user@host ~ > file /usr/lib64/firefox/firefox
/usr/lib64/firefox/firefox: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.9, stripped

Seems the lads over herehttps://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-893300-start-0.html have found a solution. _________________ - Never argue with an idiot. They just drag you down to your level and beat you with experience.
