|
|
I have an N generic usb dongle and an N router. My problem is that I can get N speeds on two Windows machines, one XP, the other Vista, but I can't get it from my Ubuntu (using the same adapter). I have no trouble connecting at G speeds. But when I loaded the Gentoo (most recent) LiveDVD, I was connecting at N speeds. I only was able to connect once since I had other issues with my monitor and then I couldn't get the connection back to verify it. I don't want to install Gentoo on that machine since it is primarily just for streaming videos from the Internet for workouts and I don't want to bang my head against the wall for just an entertainment machine and because installing Gentoo, I hear, is not that easy. Not to mention that I have already banged my head against the wall for many days trying to get Ubuntu to get the N speeds using the rt2870sta driver. I'm able to stream the vids but they're a little jerky and I really want to get 150 mbsp out of that dongle since I know it works. So, one more time, I'm willing to bang my head against the wall if I knew the driver that Gentoo uses. I might try to get it to work with my Ubuntu. Any help would be appreciated.

lsmod will show you a list of loaded modules, which is helpful, but it wont say what is being used by which hardware - useful if you can recognize driver names from memory, but may not help if you're not able to look and say "oh, hey, ath9k, that's a driver for Atheros N chips"
check out lspci -k
you'll get something like this as part of its output:
Code: |
04:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)
Subsystem: Device 1a32:0303
Kernel driver in use: ath9k
Kernel modules: ath9k
