updatedb/locate doesn't work anymore

hi,

running the commands
updatedb -v
updatedb -vvv......
updatedb -u -o test.db
doesn't work anymore.
updatedb does nothing and the created database is empty!
i am logged on as root, so i should be abled to execute that.

i remeber that it worked in the past, but now it seems to be broken.
any ideas why i shouldn't work? or how i can determine what's wrong?
