I need to get jack running, problem is it starts but it hangs during operation and no app recognizes it.

I tried
Code:
$ qdbus org.jackaudio.service /org/jackaudio/Controller StartServer

which gives me
Code:
Error: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

I also tried qjackctrl with dbus support which can start dbus I get a "tack" on my speakers but then it locks up.

I have some experience in configuring Gentoo for audio. The first thing I'd like to know is what audio functions you want to perform. Just listening to music? Recording audio? Once I know more, I might be able to provide more help.

The main reason is so that I can use my firewire audiointerface, MOTU is said to be hostile to linux but is reported to work with ffado, so I compiled jack with the ieee1394 useflag.
I want to record a) with ardour
b) use chuck to control my modular. (TRS to TS cable)
c) listen to music / use my gentoo box as midi sythesizer

But neither works, I've got ardour to run but that's about it, chuck doesn't (with jack)

Aha, magic words: Ardour, JACK, Gentoo.

Read and follow this guide: http://audiodef.com/projects.php?project_id=1

Any questions with JACK, Ardour and getting a signal into Ardour, let me know.

I'm mostly a hardware synth guy, but I do use qjackctl and a few softsynths. Also an AMT8 MIDI interface, so feel free to pick my brains in that area.

I know a guy who really knows ChucK, so if you have any questions about that, I could try to hook you up (but he knows nothing about Linux - just ChucK).
