Any application that tries to access an alsa device that is already open by another application hangs. This goes on until that first application releases the device. Solution is use arts (KDE) or esd (Gnome) sound managers that make sound mixing from all applications that use sound through them.
If you are unsure which application took your /dev/adsp device, use fuser command. |

I'd all but guarentee there is another application (artsd or esd) stealing
the device. |

i have solved ti
it was caused due to some bad config with the arts
Control Center --> Sound & Mutlimedia --> Sound System
i decrease the idle time to 5 sec instead of 60 sec and unchecked the Enable ful duplex operation |
